2 Learning Objectives The course objectives has three components i.e., pollution, pathways and population. This life cycle of air pollution will enable the student to first identify the pollutants and their sources and then the transport mechanisms of the pollutants followed by the affected population and respective controls.

3 Detailed course summary Module-1 –Historical perspectives of air pollution: episodes and history –Air pollutants: definition, sources and types of air pollution. Module-2 –Ambient air pollution monitoring: techniques and instrumentation; monitoring stations –Stack monitoring: techniques and instrumentation. –Experimental analysis: gaseous and particulates; standards and limits. Module-3 –Air pollution effects: on living and nonliving beings. –Air pollution control: principles of controls, source control. Module-4 –Air Pollution meteorology: basics of dispersion phenomenon, stability, plume shapes. Module-5 –Fundamentals of air quality modeling: definition of air quality model, Gaussian model for point source. Module-6 –Indoor air pollution: basics of indoor air quality, sources and types of indoor air pollutants, effects of indoor air pollutants. Module-7 –Issues of concerns in air pollution: green house effect, acid rain, ozone hole, and photochemical smog.

4 Learning objectives Module-1: learning objectives –To make the students aware of history of air pollution; definition of air pollution and various types of sources and classification of air pollutants. Module-2: learning objectives –To make the student aware of techniques and instrumentation of ambient air monitoring, establishment of ambient air monitoring stations; stack monitoring and experimental analysis of air gaseous and particulate air pollutants; standards and limits. Module-3: learning objectives –To make the student aware of effects of gaseous and particulate air pollutants on humans, plants and materials; principles of air pollution control and various control equipments at source.

5 Conti… Module-4: learning objectives –To make the student aware of dispersion phenomenon of air pollutants covering diffusion and advection, meteorological components, stability of atmosphere and corresponding plume shapes. Module-5: learning objectives –To make the student aware of the air quality model, its definition, types and description of Gaussian based air quality model for point source along with its application. Module-6: learning objectives –To make the student aware of the indoor air pollution, sources, causes and effects. Module-7: learning objectives –To make the student aware of the recent problems concerning with global warming, ozone hole, acid rains and smog formation.

6 General advice to the learner The learner should attentively go through the topics and their respective contents. It is preferable if the learner sits with the references as suggested at the end of each lecture. It will help the learner to supplement the lectures with examples and additional material. At the end of each lecture, the assignments have been given pertaining to the topics covered. The learners are advised to take these assignments and solve them.
