Respiratory System By: Gabe G. Jack P. Jackson T. & Claire T. Table #7

2 Overall function Cells of the human body require a constant stream of oxygen to stay alive and function properly The respiratory system provides said oxygen to the blood cells Removes carbon dioxide The major organ of the respiratory system are the lungs

3

4 Nose & Mouth We inhale air through and out of the nose and mouth hundreds of times every day The nose is the primary opening for the respiratory system The mouth is the secondary external opening for the respiratory tract

5 Pharynx & Esophagus As air continues down your throat it goes past the pharynx or throat Muscular funnel Esophagus and larynx connected The esophagus is a long tube that connects from the throat to the stomach

6 Larynx The Larynx (also known as the voice box) is a short section of the air way that is connected to the trachea The Larynx contains special structures called vocal folds that allow the body to produce vocal sound

7 Trachea The Trachea (better known as the windpipe) is a 5-inch long tube that connects the Larynx to the bronchi Allows air to pass through the neck and into the thorax The open cartilage in the trachea allows the esophagus to expand into the space The main function of the trachea is to provide a clear airway for air to enter and exit the lungs

8 Bronchi and Bronchioles
The airway splits into left and right branches at the end of the trachea known as the primary bronchi The bronchi carry air into the lobes of the lungs The secondary bronchi split into smaller tertiary bronchi within each lobe The tertiary bronchi split into many smaller bronchioles Each bronchiole further splits into many smaller branches called terminal bronchioles

9 Lungs The lungs are a pair of large, “spongy-like” organs found in the thorax lateral to the heart and superior to the diaphragm The interior of the lungs is made up of spongy tissues containing many capillaries There are around 30 million tiny sacs in the tissue which are known as alveoli The main function of the lungs is to exchange gases we breathe

10 Muscles of Respiration
Surrounding the lungs are sets of muscles The surrounding muscles support inhalation and exhalation An important muscle of respiration in the human body is the diaphragm The main responsibility for intercostal muscles is to evaluate the ribs

11 Asthma Asthma is a common chronic inflammatory disease in the airways of the respiratory system Symptoms include wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath There is an estimated million people worldwide who are affected by asthma An average of 350,000 annual deaths from the disease

12 Bronchitis Bronchitis (also known as a chest cold) is an inflammation of the bronchi lungs The different types of bronchitis are acute and chronic bronchitis Symptoms include coughing up mucus, wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest discomfort Millions of people around the world are affected by chronic bronchitis alone An estimated annual death rate per year worldwide is about 10,000 people

13 Treatment As bronchitis and asthma are rising health problems in today’s developing community, people have pursued a goal to end such diseases Unique and effective technological and professional tactics are used by doctors during these certain kinds of checkups Treatments for such diseases are used to as well indicate the condition of your breathing problems These treatments in result give doctors a heads up on what the best possible case scenario there is out there to resolve and fight off diseases

14 Peak expiratory flow test
Spirometry test Chest x-ray test
