1 Cognates Definition: cognate Syllabification: cog·nate Pronunciation: / ˈ kä ɡˌ n ā t Pronunciation: / adjective 1 Linguistics (Of a word) having the same linguistic derivation as another; from the same original word or root (e.g., English is, German ist, Latin est, from Indo- European esti ).

2 Assignment  Choose a letter of the alphabet  At the end of the textbook, you will find the glossary (R28-purple side)  Find your letter and choose at least 3 cognates  Draw your letter in a “unique” font in the middle of your paper or cut your paper in the shape of the letter  Illustrate each word on your paper

3 Grade  Letter font and colors: 0 no letter, 2 no colors, 5 colorful & neat  Words: 0 no words, 2 less than 3 words, 5 – 3 or more words  Illustrations: 0 no illustrations, 2 some illlustrations and/or no colors, 5 colorful & neat illustrations ( relevant to the words)  Due date: September 19 th at the beginning of class
