International Adult Literacy Survey IALS (1994, 1996, 1998) - 23 countries/regions - The United States and Canada participated in 1994. - Measured Prose Literacy, Document Literacy and Numeracy Adult Literacy and Lifeskills Survey ALLS (2003) -11 countries/regions -The United States and Canada participated in 2003 -Measured Prose Literacy, Document Literacy, Numeracy (modified) and Problem Solving Program for International Assessment of Adult Competencies PIAAC or International Study of Adults ISA, (2012, 2015) - 23 countries/regions participated in 2012, 10 countries in round 2. -The United States and Canada participated in 2012, the United States will also participate again -Measures Reading Literacy (modified), Numeracy, Problem Solving in Technology Rich Environments. -Low literacy is better measured through Reading Components -In addition, it measures job related skills demanded and used at work. -Laptop as well as pencil and paper data collection Education and Skills on-line - Will build on earlier on-line instrument PIAAC builds on previous Government investments in international adult surveys

How do Canada and the US invest in PIAAC data (OECD International Survey) and why this is valuable for North America Canada Participated in 2012 25,000 adults 16 to 65 Sample representative for Canada as well as provinces and territories Over sampling (nationally representative) for targeted populations –Recent immigrants –Aboriginal populations –Official language populations living in minority settings –Youth (16-24) Languages: English and French United States Participated in 2012 Nationally representative 5,000 individuals ages 16-65 Supplemental sample in 2014 Adds 5,000 individuals to expand sample with - Unemployed adults (16-65) - Young adults (16-34) - Older adults (66-74) - Incarcerated adults (16-74) Languages: English and Spanish (background questionnaire)

Sample size: 30,000 households (gross) International Study of Adults (ISA) the coordinated Longitudinal and International Study of Adults (LISA). Canadian longitudinal survey of adults linked to PIAAC The longitudinal survey will follow income and work trajectories over time. For half the sample, PIAAC data will be available on Literacy, Numeracy and Problem Solving in Technology Rich Environments from 2012. Data will be linked to tax and pension administrative data.

Education and Skills on-Line Will be available in 11 languages, including English (US and Canadian), Spanish (Spanish) and French (Canadian) An assessment tool designed to provide individual level results linked to PIAAC Measures both cognitive and non-cognitive skills Will be downloadable on demand over the internet
