The Water Crisis in Ethiopia: By: Emily Sandoval, Kathya Quintana, Edgar Perez, Gretel Adame and Courtney Humphries.

Ethiopia's Physical Geography: Ethiopia is a land locked country which means that it is surrounded by other lands and does not have much water access. It is the worlds driest point on earth which means that rivers or lakes are dried up. Lowland deserts surround high plateaus. The land is mountainous and rocky. As you can see, the land carries high mountains and there are no lakes or rivers giving out water.

The Water Crisis: In Ethiopia only 22% of the population has access to an improved water supply and clean water. They have to carry a 40 pound jugs for about 2 miles. Only 13% have access to clean water. When people drink this unclean water they might have the risk of getting sick. Children in poor environments often carry 1,000 parasitic worms in their bodies. These worms infect about 10%of the population. In Ethiopia only 22% of the population has access to an improved water supply and clean water. They have to carry a 40 pound jugs for about 2 miles. Relevant statistical information: Children in poor environments often carry 1,000 parasitic worms in their bodies. 2.5 million people in the world do not have access to sanitation, this is almost two fifths of the worlds population.443 million school days are lost each year due to water-related diseases. Also, 40 billion working hours are spent carrying water each year in Africa. These are just some of the key statistics of Ethiopia. Problems in the country/ region: In rural areas women and children walk up to six miles just to get water for their family. The jugs that they carry water in can weigh up to 40 pounds each. Some of the water that they have is dirty that can lead to diseases also it can lead to a drought. Since there is not clean water crops can’t be produced to eat. This is causing famine in Ethiopia. There are so many problems like the border war but they stopped it because Ethiopia and Eritrea signed a peace agreement in December 2000 that ended the border war. Recommendations: Our recommendations are to built wells and send messages to other places that have fresh water like the United States. Since there is water deep down the Earth, the wells need to be very long down the Earth to get water. As you can see in this picture people are trying to get water by pulling the lever up and down. Therefore, sending messages to the United States can help the water crisis more.

In Conclusion: In Conclusion: In conclusion, Ethiopia is affected by the water crisis. Only 22% of the population have access to improved water supply. People have to carry 40 pound jugs of clean water over two miles. 2.5 billion people do not have access to adequate sanitation this is almost two fifths of the population. Ethiopia is a land locked country which is the main cause of the water crisis. However, they could build deep wells to get water and they could send messages to the United States. They could figure this out over time and we are here to help.
