1 Read the article “What Is Government” and define the following terms: government, monarchy, democracy, and oligarchy.

2 Government – a system by which a country, state, or community is governed or ruled

3 Monarchy – a king or queen makes important laws for the country

4 Democracy – citizens of the country vote on laws and elect their leaders.

5 Oligarchy – a small group of powerful leaders controls the government and makes the laws.

6 1) What is the purpose of government? 2) What is a government? 3) Who has the power in a government? 4) Who has the power in a monarchy? A democracy? A oligarchy?

7 Read the article “Limited & Unlimited Powers”. Complete the following questions and tasks: 1) What is a synonym of structured as it is used in the text? 2) How does a government’s structure affect citizens? 3) Complete a graphic organizer by identifying characteristics of governments with unlimited and limited power.

8 “Forms of Government Prefixes & Suffixes”. Part A: Copy the table for prefixes, suffixes, and their meaning. Answer questions 1 – 2. Part B – Read the passage and answer questions 3 – 8. Part C - Describe a club, group, or organization in your school. Who makes the rules? Who decides what activities to do? What role do members of the club play?
