Live in mountain ranges in China, Suchuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu. Restricted to the mountain areas-used to live in lowland areas. Live in broadleaf and coniferous forests with a dense understory of bamboo, elevations of 5,000 and 10,000ft.

Size of an American Black Bear. Diet: 99% Bamboo, grasses, and small rodents or musk deer fawns.

Reach reproductive maturity at about 4-8 years old. May be reproductive until 20 years old. Ovulate once a year in the spring. Takes 95 to 160 days until birth.
