1 Energy pathways C/W 23rd October 2014 Learning Objectives:
What can affect energy pathways globally? Learning Outcomes: A/A* Grade students will be able to evaluate the effects of disruptions to energy pathways B Grade students will be able to explain the effects of disruptions to energy pathways. C Grade students will be able to describe the effects of disruptions to energy pathways. Starter: 1. Write a definition for energy pathway – use your book 2. Make a list or spider diagram of all the ways energy pathways can be disrupted

2 Pathway disruption Learning Outcomes:
Price and payment disputes Piracy e.g. off the Somali coast Terrorism or conflict closing choke points Political discord between supplier and consumer Diversion of supply, perhaps for a higher price Technical interruption to production Producer’s supply simply runs out Natural disasters Learning Outcomes: A/A* Grade students will be able to evaluate the effects of disruptions to energy pathways B Grade students will be able to explain the effects of disruptions to energy pathways. C Grade students will be able to describe the effects of disruptions to energy pathways.

3 Activity: You are going to go around the room and gather information about disruption to energy pathways to fill in your A3 sheets. Use the sources on each station to get down as much detail as possible

4 Case study name Facts and figures Who was affected? Why?

5 Russian Energy Giants –
Accounts for 92% of Russia’s gas production Is the sole gas supplier to several European countries including Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Moldova. Annual earnings of £31.55 billion Russian government still owns % of the shares.

6 Quiz Quiz Trade Get up and go and find somebody else in the room. Ask them your question and they must try and answer. Then they ask you your question and you try and answer. When you are finished swap questions and go and find somebody else and repeat!

7 Why would the Russian government keep a 50.002% share of Gazprom?

8 How can we maintain energy security and reduce reliance on Russia?
Read the article and highlight all the ways in which Europe is trying to increase energy security given the fact the Russian gas supply is unstable. Then stick in book.

9 Write a paragraph to summarise today’s learning

10 June 2011 Using named examples, assess the extent to which energy insecurity might lead to conflicts both within and between countries (15)

11 Constructive plate boundary Destructive plate boundary/(conservative)
2. Skjaldbreiður, Iceland 1. Popocatepetl, Mexico Constructive plate boundary Destructive plate boundary/(conservative)

12 Learning Outcomes: A/A* Grade students will be able to explain the difference between composite and shield volcanos using key terms and predict what volcanoes are most likely in given areas. B Grade students will be able to explain the difference between composite and shield volcanos C Grade students will be able to describe the differences between composite and shield volcanoes.

13 Composite Volcanoes What type of plate boundary do composite volcanoes appear at? What are eruptions like? What are the layers of the volcano made of?

14 Shield Volcanoes What do you notice about the lava in comparison? How could this explain the shape of the volcanoes?

20 What is Fair Trade? “Fairtrade is a strategy for poverty alleviation and sustainable development. Its purpose is to create opportunities for producers and workers who have been economically disadvantaged or marginalized by the conventional trading system. If fair access to markets under better trade conditions would help them to overcome barriers to development, they can join Fairtrade.” What are the key words in this statement?

21 Diamond 9 In your groups, arrange your 9 statements in order of which you most agree with and which you least agree with 5 mins

22 Activity: Copy and complete these sentences:
The statement that I thought was the most important was ……………… because….. The statement that I thought was the least important was ……………….because……

23 Going bananas in the Dominican Republic
Watch the video and answer the following questions: What is the name of the cooperative set up in this clip? How much extra do they get per pound for Fair Trade bananas? Name 3 things they have been able to fund with the extra income they get.

24 Where else have you seen this logo?
Fair trade prize competition: Think of as many FairTrade products as you can. It’s Fair Trade fortnight, so hopefully you’ve seen lots around! Work in pairs or on your own (if you work in a pair, be prepared to split the prize!) You cannot just name things that are edible You cannot name more than 2 fruits Random name generator will be used to select a person in the class. If they can name 5 products they win the prize. If they can’t, we pick another name until someone can!

25 Where else have you seen this logo?

26 Do you think LA should become a Fair Trade school?
What would this mean and how could it be achieved? Would you be willing to pay more for FT products?
