2 Using Google More Effectively Read through the Power Point and answer the questions on each slide using Google. When writing number you must use the thousands separator!!!

3 Ways to improve your searches  Be specific There are millions of web pages out there. Enter only the most important key words. ○ Holiday travel In response, Google gives you pages with the words “holiday” and “travel” Using Google and Bing, search for holiday travel: Write down how many search results came up from each search engine. Google

4 Ways to improve your searches  Use quotes Putting quotes around a phrase will make it more likely you’ll find exactly what you’re looking for. ○ “Holiday Travel” Now, search for “holiday travel”. Write down how many search results you get. Use Google and Bing. Google

5 Ways to improve your searches  -word Holiday –travel ○ The word “holiday” but not the word “travel” In response, Google gives you pages with the word “holiday” but not the word “travel.” Search for “holiday” but not the word “travel” (type it in Google and Bing exactly like it reads). How many results did you get? Google

6 Ways to improve your searches  Boolean Operators (And, Or, Not)  Using Google and Bing, search for the following topics and write down the number of results you get. And ○ Salsa And Dance In response, Google gives you pages with both the words “salsa” and “dance” Or ○ Salsa Or Dance In response, Google gives you pages with the word “salsa” or the word “dance” Not ○ Salsa Not Dance In response, Google gives you pages with the word “salsa” but not the word “dance” Google

7 Ways to improve your searches (Use Google Only)  Use the “Advanced Search” Feature and search for “holiday travel”. Write down the number of results you get. Click the following options under the Advanced Search option: ○ Last Update: past 24 hours Google

Phonebook Phonebook: john doe ○ In response, Google gives you a page with a list of all of the people named “John Doe” listed in the phonebook. ○ Write down how many results you get.  Rphonebook is for “residential” numbers ○ Write down how many results you get when you search for john doe.  Bphonebook is for “business” numbers Google
