The arts are already part of my life: MUSIC
Play instruments myself
Wanted to incorporate the arts in my class, but didn't know how to go about it
Wasn't sure how I felt about dramatic play for children
Didn’t know the benefits for children

3. Creating Lesson 1: Drums
Wanted to incorporate music
Had access to musical instruments of all kinds
Work at a music store
How can I get all of the children involved?
How can I be sure it is open-ended/flexible?

4. Lesson 1: Drums Brought in a variety of drums
Djembe, Cajon, Bongos, Snare Drum
Made sure each child got to explore them
Conversations about rhythm, patterns, and beat
Patterns part of day to day class discussion
Literacy to enhance purpose

6. Lesson 1: Drums – After
Planned on extending the lesson so that children could make their own instruments
Children changed this course when they wanted to bring in their own instruments to share instead
Because I shared instruments with them, they wanted to do the same

7. Creating Lesson 2: Painting with Drumming
Wanted to connect lessons 1 & 2 to make it meaningful for the class
Wanted to explore art more in this lesson
Thought about the drums seen in some performances with paint on them
Wanted to help children see the way they could make patterns in drumming

8. Lesson 2: Painting with Drumming
Visually could see their rhythm and patterns with paint from drumming with brushes
Provided butcher paper, paint brushes, different colors of paint, drumming music
Drummed to African drumming music which connected to stories we had read from Africa Cultural Story Box
Literacy to enhance lesson

Loved working with the children and exploring art together
Realized that I don't have to be the best at it to provide great experience for the class
Incorporating things you enjoy makes it meaningful for everyone
Taking risks yourself helps children to take risks
