Overview of CTE Honors Courses Buncombe County 2011-1012

All CTE courses can be offered as an Honors Course However... you must have CTE Director’s approval before beginning the “Honors Course Teaching Preparation Portfolio”

CTE Honors Courses Must be aligned with the current: NC Career &Technical Education Essential Standards & Honors Course Implementation Guide

Purpose To offer challenging, higher level courses for students who aspire to an advanced level of learning To promote: – Opportunities for advanced work – Rigorous study of CTE content areas – Practical application of knowledge & skills – Transfer of knowledge & skills to work-based situations – More student involvement and ownership of the honors projects

Characteristics Follow the same course of study – Content outline – Blueprint – Curriculum guide Require a higher level of cognition & quality of work Enable students to become actively involved in the classroom experiences – Defend or negate an issue – Develop a proposal – Evaluate or analyze a problem

Assessments Involving multiple & varied means Include both cognitive & performance-based tasks Develop & provide relative rubrics Include student involvement in rubric design

CTE Honors Teaching Portfolio Must clearly & concisely include: – General course information – Course description from CTE Essential Standards – Competency goals, & objectives from course blueprint – Concepts from course outline – Generalizations – Essential questions – Issues particular to course – Expectations of performance – Assignments – Timetables & deadlines – Pacing Guide – Assessments, including rubrics – A system for grading – Instructional materials, equipment & technologies

Honors Course Process Buncombe County – Check with your school’s CDC for the list of currently approved CTE Honors Course offerings – If your course is not listed, contact your CTE Director for approval to begin work on the “Honors Course Teaching Preparation Portfolio” – Visit the regional Wiki site (http://ctehonors.wikispaces.com) to access the honors course documentshttp://ctehonors.wikispaces.com

Honors Course Process cont. Use the template & instructions provided on the Wiki to create your Honors Course Portfolio Submit completed portfolio template & enhanced honors course blueprint to Kevin Roberson (kevin.roberson@bcsemail.org)kevin.roberson@bcsemail.org The portfolio will be reviewed by the Honors Committee Once approved, the course will be sent to the CDCs for district-wide implementation
