W HAT IS MIND MAPPING ? Mind mapping is the process of creating a visual display of a concept using symbols, images, colors, and key words. Mind Maps demonstrate how words and ideas relate to each other.

W HY M IND M AP ? Mind Maps: Encourage creativity. Promote visual thinking skills. Contextualize learning in meaningful ways. Promote active involvement. Foster Cooperative Learning. Assist ALL students in learning concepts and vocabulary because information is presented visually.

B RAIN C OMPATIBLE L EARNING Mind mapping closely mirrors our natural thinking processes. It involves the whole brain because both left and right hemispheres of our brain are involved.

I MPROVED C OMPREHENSION To create a mind map, students must be able to make content connections and make content connections and make content connections and make decisions about how to display the information in a meaningful way.

M EMORY Since mind maps symbolize concepts with short, easy-to-remember visual and linguistic cues, students are able to remember more of what they see and draw than what they read and hear.

ELL S TUDENTS Information is presented visually rather than verbally therefore assisting ELL students in grasping concepts, content, and vocabulary.

M IND M APPING G UIDELINES Start in the center with an image of the topic, using at least 3 colors.

U SE IMAGES, SYMBOLS, CODES, AND DIMENSIONS THROUGHOUT YOUR MIND MAP.

E ACH WORD / IMAGE IS BEST ALONE AND SITTING ON ITS OWN LINE.

M AKE THE LINES THE SAME LENGTH AS THE WORD / IMAGE THEY SUPPORT. Use multiple colors throughout the mind map, for visual stimulation and also to encode or group.

T HE LINES SHOULD BE CONNECTED, STARTING FROM THE CENTRAL IMAGE. T HE CENTRAL LINES ARE THICKER, ORGANIC AND THINNER AS THEY RADIATE OUT FROM THE CENTER.

K EEP THE MIND MAP CLEAR BY USING RADIAL HIERARCHY, NUMERICAL ORDER OR OUTLINES TO EMBRACE YOUR BRANCHES.

U SE EMPHASIS AND SHOW ASSOCIATIONS IN YOUR MIND MAP. Develop your own personal style of mind mapping & be creative!
