5 What is an ankle sprain?  An ankle sprain is a common injury to the ankle joint  It occurs when someone rolls their ankle past their normal degree of movement  Most often this happens as a result of tripping, jumping and landing on an uneven surface, or slipping on wet ground  Common symptoms of an ankle sprain are swelling, bruising, pain, soreness, and stiffness

6 Caring for an ankle sprain  The first step in managing an ankle sprain is rest  It’s very important to apply ice once you have assessed the injury  The third crucial step when taking care of an ankle sprain is compression  An elastic bandage works well for compression  To reduce swelling, you must also elevate the ankle by propping it up on a pillow, box etc.
