1 Evidence-Based Practice Literature Review Fall 2007 Helen Hough, BA, BS, M.L.S.

2 What is Evidence-Based Nursing (EBN)? the process by which nurses make clinical decisions using the (1) best available research evidence, (2) their clinical expertise and (3) patient preferences. Three important areas of research competence are: (1) interpreting and using research, (2) evaluating practice, and (3) conducting research. Adapted from http://evidence.ahc.umn.edu/ebn.htm

3 To carry out EBN the following factors must be considered:  -sufficient research must have been published on the specific topic  -the nurse must have skill in accessing and critically analyzing research  -the nurse's practice must allow implementation of changes based on EBN Adapted from http://evidence.ahc.umn.edu/ebn.htm

4 Advances in Nursing Science Annual Review of Nursing Research Applied Nursing Research Biological Research for Nursing Canadian Journal of Nursing Research Clinical Nursing Research Evidence Based Nursing Journal of Nursing Measurement Journal of Nursing Scholarship NT Research Nurse Researcher Nursing Research Nursing Science Quarterly Oncology Nursing Forum Online Journal of Knowledge Synthesis Research in Nursing and Health Scholarly Inquiry for Nursing Practice Western Journal of Nursing Research Where is research published? Typically in journals, with focus in research journals:

5 Other useful materials Journals & resources may also have  Meta-analysis  Clinical guidelines or be  Cochrane review ( http://eresource.uta.edu/cgi-bin/db-cochlib.cgi) http://eresource.uta.edu/cgi-bin/db-cochlib.cgi  www.guidelines.gov www.guidelines.gov  Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (http://www.ahrq.gov/ )http://www.ahrq.gov/

6 First thing to do A literature review Where is the literature stored?  In libraries http://www.uta.edu/library How do you find the literature?  A lit database search. http://library.uta.edu/JDBC/DBs/dbAtoZ.jsp

7 Access - Databases The question dictates the appropriate database. Favorites: CINAHLMedline/PubMed Health Source/NursingPsycINFO Health Reference Center http://library.uta.edu/JDBC/DBs/dbAtoZ.jsp

8 Half of all good work is the thought put into it before action Expert = accumulation of thought

9 Question-based literature review strategy What is the problem? “Children with autism are difficult to treat and their parents are weird/demanding.” What is the question? “Are there unique orientation, patient education, & treatment information needs of the child and family impacted by autism?” What are the question’s concepts? 1: autism 2: information

10 Question-based database selection Q: “Are there unique orientation, patient education, & treatment information needs of the child and family impacted by autism?” Areas: Health related, Children, Psychiatric Databases: Nursing, Medical, Education, Psychology

11 Be prepared Preparatory exploration of database (content area, layout, limits, protocols) Concept synonyms Adjust strategy (new information, subjects vs keywords) False drops (irrelevant retrievals) You can’t break the DB, attempts are trials

12 General Rule Start big Narrow down Is the reason for 0 retrievals because there nothing in the stupid database or were the wrong words used? http://library.uta.edu/JDBC/DBs/dbAtoZ.jsp

13 Examples Cochrane Reviews 1. Autism2. Patient education Consider references, Cited reference searching

14 Examples National Guideline Clearinghouse (www.guidelines.gov)www.guidelines.gov Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (www.ahrq.gov/)www.ahrq.gov/) Autism

15 Examples CINAHL CINAHL ----------------------------------- Autism Limits Peer-reviewMeta-analysis ReviewsResearch ProtocolsCEUs Guidelines Do NOT limit to full text Explore records/thesaurus for patient education concepts Cited reference searching http://library.uta.edu/JDBC/DBs/dbAtoZ.jsp

16 Examples Medline with MESH Medline with MESH Autism PsycINFO Autism, Asperger, Pervasive Developmental Disorder What are available limits? http://library.uta.edu/JDBC/DBs/dbAtoZ.jsp http://library.uta.edu/JDBC/DBs/dbAtoZ.jsp

17 Getting the materials Using MyEBSCO (alerts) and/or RefWorksMyEBSCORefWorks http://eresource.uta.edu/cgi-bin/db-cinahl.cgi 1 st : At UT Arlington: Check E-journal list & Library Catalog http://library.uta.edu/ http://library.uta.edu/ 2 nd : Not at UT Arlington: Interlibrary Loan TexShare, “Find In A Library” or WorldCat http://www.worldcat.org http://www.worldcat.org
