SixDegrees.com allowed users to create profiles, list their Friends and, beginning in 1998, surf the Friends lists. Each of these features existed in some form before SixDegrees, of course but SixDegrees was the first to combine all these features.

This newer generation of social networking sites began to flourish with the emergence of Friendster in 2002, and soon became part of the Internet mainstream.

Attesting to the rapid increase in social networking sites' popularity, by 2005, MySpace was reportedly getting more page views than Google.
