M ULTIPLICATION P ATTERNS S QUARES A REA S QUARE R OOTS BY: Philip Collins Created for Mathese-2D 2007

V OCABULARY Array-------numbers or symbols arranged in row or columns Area---------number of square units needed to cover a surface. Row-------a line in the horizontal Column-------a line in the vertical

V OCABULARY C ONTINUED square root--------one of two equal factors of a number. square number--------The product when a whole number is multiplied by itself.

M ULTIPLICATION P ATTERNS One way to think of multiplication patterns is by using an array. Remember that an array is an arrangement of numbers or symbols in columns or rows.

A RRAYS 6 columns X X X X X X X X X 2 rows This array is a collection of 2 rows and 6 columns

X X X X X How many rows does this array have?__________ How many columns does this array have?_______ How many X’s are in this array?_____

X X X X X What multiplication problem can we make with this array? Because we have 4 rows and 5 columns We make the problem 4 x 5 = 20

Let’s practice array pattern

A REA What would the area if this shape be?

Lets say that each side of a small square is 1 cm.

There are four rows 1 2 3 4

and five columns 1 2354

We will multiply 4 and 5. The answer will be written in square units. We are using cm so the answer will be 1 2 2 3 354 4

20 square cm 1 6 2 7 121113 3 8 54 1514 109 1617182019

REVIEW AREA LESSON Area lesson

S QUARES AND SQUARE ROOTS A square is a rectangle that has equal sides.

1 2 12 321 2 2 by 2 3 3 by 3

If a shape is 3 by 3, then we can say that it has a square number of 9. Because 3x3=9. We will write the number under square root sign. It means the square root of. If a problem asks for the square root of 9 then we think of the Problem 3x3.Our answer will be 3. 1 7 2 6 9 3 8 54 9

S OLVE THE PROBLEMS Lets Practice square root problems
