2 -Public education is free at primary and secondary levels -Compulsory from the ages of 6 to 16 60 million people in France: -15 million students -No uniforms -Teachers: civil servants:paid by the state -Teachers Unions

3 Most shools (85 %) are state run Private schools (often catholic schools) are partially subsidized and fully regulated by the State. Some students are educated at home

4 French education is centralized with a nationwide curriculum imposed by the Ministry of Education that ensures national uniformity.

5 PRIMARY EDUCATION NURSARY SCHOOL From age 3 to 6 Not compulsory

6 PRIMARY EDUCATION PRIMARY SCHOOLS From 6 to 11 1 primary school teacher-26 hours per week in front of students Free, compulsory and non religious Students learn basic skills and citizenship The subjects taught are : - French, history, geography and civic studies - Mathematics, science and technology - Physical Education, arts and crafts, and music

7 School year from September to June BREAKS: Autumn break:10 days Christmas break:2 weeks Winter break:2 weeks Spring break :2 weeks Summer break: 2 months

8 SECONDARY EDUCATION Junior High school From 11 to 14 Teacher: 18 hours with students School assignment is normally determined simply by your address National test (written examination) in June called ‘Brevet des collèges’ in French, Maths and History/Geography/foreign language/abilities to use computers. Not necessary to pass it to go to high school Example :subjects taught in our junior high school: French/maths/history/geography/citizenship/art/music/En glish/German/Spanish/physics/biology/technology/P.E./L atin

9 SECONDARY EDUCATION HIGH SCHOOL From 15 to 18 Secondary schools or secondary schools for vocational training Examination:BACCALAUREAT -necessary to pass it to go to university-written part and oral part -no multiple choice questions-in June

10 HIGHER EDUCATION 89 universities Vocational training Grandes écoles of engineering and business administrations (highly selective competitive examination)
