22 CONTENTS 1.Climate Change 2.Water Supply System 3.Rainfall 4.Dam Storage 5.Water Consumption 6.Affects of Climate Change 7.Climate Change Mitigation 8.Conclusion
3
33 When did climate change start? Fact: 1.NMBM has a drought every 4 years over at least the last 20 yrs! 2.Every drought is broken by a flood or heavy rainfall. 3.Any persistent rain appears to be causing flooding! 1. CLIMATE CHANGE

16 6. AFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE Drought / flood cycles occurs regularly. Drought / flood future: No rain periods will be more prolonged! Rainfall period shorter & more intense! Will our water sources be sufficient? Affects of El Nino & La Nino! Urbanisation creates greater impact on same water sources. Housing Programme (80 000 units). Economic growth
17
17 7. CLIMATE CHANGE MITIGATION Water Master Plan: NCLLS: water from different catchment (R770M) Recycling of wastewater (R1,5 Billion) Industrial use Indirect potable use WC/WDM (R57M pa) NRW – leak detection etc. Water Saving Awareness Campaign. WC/WDM must be an ongoing programme. Groundwater (R150) Desalination (R1 Billion) New infrastructure to support development.
18
18 7. CLIMATE CHANGE MITIGATION cont… Sanitation Master Plan: Upgrading of 6 wastewater treatment works (R1.6 Billion): Energy efficiency Energy abstraction Rehabilitation of reticulation network: Reduce ingress of stormwater New infrastructure to support development Rehabilitation of pump stations.
19
19 7. CLIMATE CHANGE MITIGATION cont… Design intervention: Energy Efficiency: Operational Efficiency. Equipment efficiency. Water & Wastewater Treatment Process optimisation. Water Services By Law: House designs: Rain water harvesting Township layout designs: Strom water mitigation
20
20 8. CONCLUSIONS Climate change affects: Water availability Future use of water WC/WDM as a daily practice Reuse of water Water & Sanitation tariffs Efficient use of electricity Domestic & industrial consumption of services Town planning
