Fossil Fuels By: Shae Sanchez
2
History of Fossil Fuels
Fossil Fuel came from remnants of plants and animals that died around 300 million years ago. The remains of the plants and animals became covered in topsoil, and the recycling action of the earths crust moved the remains further and further underground. This created immense pressure and heat on the remains which resulted in Hydrocarbon-dense material. The three mains forms are: – coal (rocklike fossil fuel) - oil/petroleum (liquid fossil fuel) - natural gas (a gaseous fossil fuel)
3
How the Power is Generated
Fossils produce energy when they become fossil fuels. When the remnants of a life form, such as decaying plants and animals become compressed under the pressure of the earth under which they are buried, they form fossil fuels such as oil and coal. These fossil fuels can then be extracted by mining or drilling, and burned to create energy.

Fossil Fuel Powered Steam Turbine Electricity Generation
Another example of how fossil fuel is generated. In fossil fuelled plants steam is raised by burning fuel, mostly coal but also oil and gas, in a combustion chamber.

Examples Found in British Columbia
Fossil fuels are located in: Coal Ports: Westshore Terminal, Port Riddell & Neptune Port. Oil Refineries: Burnaby Oil Refinery & Prince George Refinery Coal Mines: Coal Mountain, Elkview, Line Creek, Greenhills, Fording River, Brule, Roman, Perry-Wolverine, Quinsam Coal Mine, & Trend

Pros & Cons Pros: Relatively cheap and plentiful
Advanced technology have been developed to allow safe extraction The means for controlling pollution from the fuels already exist The technology already exists for the fuels use e.g. petrol driven cars The income from the sale of the fuel can help a country's economy At present, no other energy source can fully and safely replace fossil fuel Cons: Fossil fuels will became more and more expensive to extract Extracting the fuel will be more dangerous as the mines get deeper or if the oil rigs go further out to the sea Pollution from the fuels is said to be responsible for global warming, acid rain, and oil spillage Its very expensive to control the pollution and the price of the fuel would have to rise

Price of Fossil Fuel What is the cost for each kilowatt/hour? Is that price expected to climb or drop? The total funding for renewable energy in 2010 was at 66 billion, but are still be shortened by the total value of global fossil fuel - estimated between 775 billion and over 1 trillion in 2012 according to the new research by "Vital Signs Online" service. Although total subsidies are significantly lower for renewable energy than those for fossil fuel, they are higher per kilowatt-hour if external factors are not included within the calculations. It is expected to climb because collecting fossil fuel is becoming more and more expensive to extract.
