3. What is coal? Coal is a rock that is formed from the layering of plant and animal materials that have been compressed over millions of years. Some types of coal undergo lots of heat and pressure.

4. How do we get coal? Since coal is a sedimentary rock (and some types can be metamorphic), it is found far underground, we get it by digging it up. This is also known as mining.

6. How do we use coal for energy? Because it is a rock, in order to use coal for energy, we must burn it. Water heated by burning coal converts into steam and generates electricity. The electricity travels to us through wires!

8. What is crude oil? Crude oil (also known as petroleum) is a fossil fuel formed from prehistoric organisms whose remains settled at the bottoms of oceans and lakes millions of years ago.
