2 HOW TO USE THIS PRESENTATION DECK  This slide deck has been created by the U.S. Department of Education as a resource tool for the public and is part of a larger “bookshelf” of resources that may be found on the Department’s website.  Within the larger bookshelf, you will find individual resource “booklets” like this one, on topics ranging from early learning to higher education.  Together, these booklets provide facts and data on: – Progress in education reform – The challenges ahead – The U.S. Department of Education’s initiatives in these areas  Please view the notes section on each slide for additional information and resources.  The entire deck is in the public domain, and may be used and shared freely. 2

3 SCHOOL SAFETY: 3 ALL YOUTH SHOULD LIVE & LEARN IN SAFE ENVIRONMENTS VICTIMS OF VIOLENT CRIME BY AGE Youths are far more likely to be victims of violent crime than other age groups.

4 SCHOOL SAFETY The Obama administration has launched a coordinated, government-wide effort to help schools respond to emergencies, and to create safe and nurturing learning environments.  Create positive school climates that support effective education for all students  Provide assistance as schools develop, implement and improve emergency management plans  Break the cycle of violence in communities  Provide emergency assistance to restore the learning environment following a disaster 4

5 SCHOOL SAFETY:  The U.S. Department of Education’s proposals related to school safety are part of a broader, administration-wide plan to protect children and help local communities ensure safety. – School Climate Transformation Grants: These grants will help schools train their teachers and staff to implement evidence-based behavioral intervention strategies that improve school climate and reduce bullying. – Successful, Safe, and Healthy Students State and Local Grants: These grants will help states, districts, and schools to meet the specific needs of their communities by supporting programs that improve school climate and student's mental and physical health. 5 FEDERAL SUPPORT FOR KEEPING SCHOOLS & COMMUNITIES SAFE

6 SCHOOL SAFETY:  Additional programs to keep students safe include: – Project Prevent Grants: These grants will enable school districts with high levels of violence to provide supports and services to address trauma or anxiety while promoting conflict resolution and other school-based strategies to prevent future violence. – Project SERV (School Emergency Response to Violence): These grants help restore the learning environment after a natural disaster or violent incident at or near a school, college, or university. 7 SCHOOL SAFETY: NEW FEDERAL GUIDANCE ON SCHOOL DISCIPLINE 7  In January 2014, the U.S. Departments of Education and Justice released a school discipline guidance package to assist states, districts, and schools in developing practices and strategies to enhance school climate, and ensure those policies and practices comply with federal law.

9 SCHOOL SAFETY:  Parents, school staff, and other adults in communities can help students prevent bullying by talking about it, building a safe school environment, and creating a community-wide bullying prevention strategy.  To find out what you can do, visit StopBullying.gov, a website filled with resources, tips, and information about bullying, who’s at risk, and how to help.
