The student will demonstrate an understanding of Earth and Space systems. TAKS Objective 5 water carbon nitrogen
3
Predict the results of modifying the Earth’s nitrogen, water and carbon cycles TEKS 8.12 C water carbon nitrogen
4
1.The student will summarize the effects of human activity on the water cycle: global warming, water quality and water quantity Lesson Objective water carbon nitrogen
5
The Water Cycle The Water Cycle
6
True of False: There is plenty of water Question water carbon nitrogen
7
There is a limited supply of potable water on earth. Earth's Water Supply
8
Earth’s Water
9
Extreme Water water carbon nitrogen
10
Engage Use the textbook or pictures from the internet to show students –Diminished water quantity –Diminished water quality
11
Diminished Water Supply
16
Explore The Environmental Protection Agency Answer the following questions 1.Where is water stored? 2.How does water move from one place to another? 3.What is infiltration? 4.What is runoff? 5.How does global warming affect the water cycle? Use information about the effect of (a) the wet cycle and (b) the dry cycle.
17
Explain Debrief Review questions related to the EPA water cycle animated video clip
18
Where is water stored? Water is stored in oceans, lakes, rivers, and groundwater.
19
How does water move from one place to another? Evaporation, transpiration, condensation, precipitation.
20
What is infiltration? Infiltration is water movement between the spaces in the soil.
21
What is runoff? Runoff occurs when water flows over the ground instead of sinking into the ground.
22
How does global warming affect the water cycle? Include information about the effect of: a)The wet cycle b)The dry cycle
23
Global warming intensifies the water cycle because the earth’s surface is a little warmer and this increases evaporation. a). Where there is too much water, there is more water infiltrating and more runoff. This could cause flooding and negative effects on plants and animals living in the area. b). In areas away from a water source more evaporation and transpiration could dry out the soil. This could lead to lowered ground water supply, and have negative effects on the plants and animals living in the area.
24
Elaborate Create a diagram showing the effects of global warming on the water cycle.
25
Evaluate Summarize the effects of human activity on the water cycle: global warming, water quality, and quantity.
