Goals Increase students’ math and science knowledge Allow students to learn about scientific reasoning Improve students’ problem-solving skills

General Information When: February 20, 2016 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Where: Chandler City Conference Center 180 S. Arizona Ave. Who: Elementary-aged children, grades 6-8

Rules Students may not use notes, calculators, or their own supplies Students may be coached in advance Exact problems given to students are kept confidential until event Parents, teachers, and coaches may observe from bleachers

Events You can set up events in a gymnasium as shown here. I’ll describe the events on the next few slides.

Events for This Year’s Olympiad Mystery Architecture (tower building) Math Boggle (formulate equations from numbers on a grid) Trebuchets (fuzzy ball launch) Tangrams (shape puzzles)

Mystery Architecture Build the tallest tower ppossible Use only supplies provided Supplies are a mystery until bag is opened

Math Boggle Create math equations using contiguous squares Example: 9, 7, and 2 next to each other Create the equation 9 – 7 = 2

Trebuchets Use trebuchets to shoot fuzzy balls Trebuchets are a fixed distance from targets Must determine the correct amount of tensioon

Tangrams Use 7 tans (flat objects in different sizes and shapes) Arrange tans to form specified larger shapes

Awards Top 3 students in each grade in each event Top 3 schools in each grade in each event Overall top 3 school winners in each grade
