2. What is VIOLENCE? The threat of or actual use of physical force against oneself or another Often results in injury or death Examples: Homicide (2 nd leading cause of death 15-24 year olds) Suicide (3 rd leading cause of death 15-24 year olds) Relationship Abuse

3. BULLYING Unwanted, aggressive behavior that involves a real perceived power imbalance The behavior is repeated or has potential to be repeated over time Effects of Bullying Anxiety and stress about coming to or being at school Fear Depression Decreased self-esteem Suicidal thoughts Lower grades

4. CYBER BULLYING Using technology to threat, insult or harass someone repeatedly Facebook Twitter Text Messages Emails Ways to STOP Bullying SPEAK UP Reach out to bullying victims Don’t laugh at others expense Don’t make jokes or single out another person

5. What IMPACT does friendship have on a bullying victim? Friendships can.. Provide a support system Help the victim know they are not alone Create a safe environment Stop some of the bullying from happening

6. HARASSMENT (non-sexual): Unwanted remarks or actions that cause a person emotional or physical harm Examples: Using racist slang, phrases or nicknames Remarks about skin color or religious beliefs Making offensive gestures

7. SEXUAL HARASSMENT: Any uninvited or unwelcome sexual remark or sexual advance Examples: Making comments about one’s body type Unwanted touching Telling inappropriate jokes about body parts or one’s sexual behavior

8. Sexual Harassment: What can YOU do Avoid being alone with someone you don’t trust Report behavior to an adult Speak up Use refusal skills to reject unwanted sexual advances

9. HAZING “An act that may cause harm, humiliation, extreme mental or physical stress, as well as intimidation, in order for a student to be initiated into or accepted into a student team or activity” Examples Socially Isolating new members Expecting new members to perform personal services (i.e. carrying books, cooking or cleaning) Be expected to harass others Forced to drink unknown substances or mixtures

12. Preventing Fights Once you recognize a conflict, there are two general approaches people take: Ignoring the Conflict OR Confronting a Person Wisely

13. Ignore the Conflict Situations not worth the argument Ignore a conflict if… You will never see the person again The individual is not important The situation is based on rumors that can be overlooked A person tries to provoke you into a fight

14. Confronting a Person Wisely Choose the time and place carefully [seek a wise person] Stay calm Negotiate a Solution (Be willing to apologize) Use I-Messages (States the problem, without blaming someone for it)
