Offensive Game Planning
FERRIS STATE FOOTBALL Offensive Game Planning WHAT WE ARE THINKING What can we do with formations to manipulate the defense into giving us a favorable situation to run our base plays. Find out the defenses’ rules in terms of formation adjustments Find out the defenses’ rules in terms of motion adjustments Find favorable personnel matchups, use formations to isolate those matchups & exploit them.

Preparing for the 4-2-5 Defense
6
Preparing for the 4-2 Box 4-2-5 Defense
FS C C S B M W E T N E Undetectable motion for the slot to the side of the 3-tech (Loop short Midline / Lizzy Inside Veer)
7
Preparing for the 4-2 Box Base Formation
FS C C S B M W E T N E If FS is running the alley hard or spinning down hard, we will run crack to seam / sideline route off IV play action. If he is not, we can start cheating perimeter blocking schemes to leave him unblocked.
8
Preparing for the 4-2 Box Base Formation
FS C C S B M W E T N E Liz motion across to have him help seal the edge for Option Pass. Seam Pass with normal Lizzy motion to the backfield with IV Triple play action is another way to isolate that OLB (W).
9
Preparing for the 4-2 Box Base Tight
FS C C S B M W E T N E Can run IV out of this, but the Bubble scenario really makes their secondary structure have to change – we have leverage right now off the Liz motion as shown here. Fly Toss another good option to leverage & the edge.
10
Preparing for the 4-2 Box Con / Pro Formation
FS C S B M W C E T N E If we want to run our IV triple option play, this formation will allow us to do it. If they adjust as shown, we will just run it to the right guaranteed to have the angles we want. Also gives us midline WITHOUT motion to the TE side.
11
Preparing for the 4-2 Box Con / Pro Formation
FS C B M W C S E N T E If we want to run our IV triple option play, this formation will allow us to do it. If they adjust as shown, we will just run it to the left guaranteed to have the angles we want. Call the formation to run to the wide side of the field (use every advantage available)
12
Rt. / Lt. Trips Nub Formation
Preparing for the 4-2 Box Rt. / Lt. Trips Nub Formation FS C C B M W S E N T E Really like running IV Triple option to the TE side vs. this look. How active is the FS on motion? Can we get the bubble or slip screen (#’s and leverage of defenders)?
13
Jeep lion (Ram) Formation
Preparing for the 4-2 Box Jeep lion (Ram) Formation FS C C B M W S E N T E How does FS play this? Looking for quick game Do you get an Under front as seen (counter motion {Loop/Ring} to run IV Triple or do you get a 3-tech/7-tech Over front to run Midline against?
14
Preparing for the 4-3 Defense
15
Preparing for the 4-1 Box 4-3 Defense
SS FS C C S M W E T N E Run MIDLINE – watch for Mike depth & drill offensive guard appropriately. Do not allow “S” or “W” to cheat & play the run. We prefer to throw the ball vs. 7 men in the box in this situation.
16
Preparing for the 4-1 Box BASE
SS FS C S M W C E T N E When “S” & “W” do cheat to defend the run, attack the perimeter with the quick game – explore Bubble / Zip / Hitch. Shoot the hole with a fade if in Cover 2. Also determine traditional cover 2 or ¼ coverage to exploit with Smash or Pole concepts.
17
Preparing for the 4-1 Box BASE
SS FS C S M W C E T N E Are they spinning their safeties as we run IV Triple? Look for Crack-to-Seam/Sideline or backside Post depending on backside safety rotation.
18
Preparing for the 4-1 Box Con / Pro Formation
SS FS C S M W C E T N E This formation gives us a side to run IV Triple (to the right as shown) and a side to run Midline (to the left with either no motion or motion like IV Triple). We can still play the quick game. Manipulate boundary/field.
19
Trips Rt. / LT. Flex Formation
Preparing for the 4-1 Box Trips Rt. / LT. Flex Formation SS C W S M FS C E N T E Show a 3X1 passing formation to get the defense to change secondary structure & continue to run Midline. Can motion #1 to run IV Triple. Take advantage of one on one opportunity on the backside. **Put it in the boundary, as well just to see if they will cheat personnel to the field.
20
Preparing for the 5-2 or 3-4 Defense
21
Preparing for the 3-2 Box BASE
SS FS C S M B W C T N T Make them defend run & pass with S & W. If they cheat to defend run, throw quick game at them Bubble/Zip/Hitch/Fade/Slant If they widen out to defend pass, run IV Triple & Midline at them.
22
Preparing for the 3-2 Box Rt (Lt) Trips
SS FS C S M B C W T N T Look for Bubble and derivatives like Stick / @Bubble 82 89 Midline away from Trips OT blocks “S”, and to Trips OT blocks FS/W. Have OG’s free release to LBs & RB will have 2-way go on Center’s block.
23
Preparing for the 3-2 Box Con / Pro
SS FS C S M B C T N T E Outside Veer Triple (RB tracks OT) to the TE side. Midline with a TED block to TE side. IV Triple to the split side (OT may need to “SHARK” if 4-tech is slamming down hard. Do NOT let “S” cheat on the run game. Also explore matchups with flanker
24
Preparing for the 3-2 Box R (L) Over
SS C M B FS C S T N T E Who covers #2? Is it the secondary structure that changes as shown here? If so, Midline to the split side is good. Counter motion, with IV to the TE side is good & so is Outside Veer Give/Keep double option without motion.
25
Preparing for the 3-2 Box R (L) Over
SS FS C M B C S T N T E This Over set forces the secondary structure to change. Cover TE or put both OT’s on same side and the TE as the backside OT. Quick game to strong side, one on one matchups to the weakside. O Veer running to the strong side. If “SS” & “C” over rotate then run IV back to the weak side.
26
Preparing for the 3-3 Defense
27
Preparing for the 3-3 Box BASE
FS C W B M B S C T N T First of all, identify HOK & PK in Base set for IV Triple play. Trap is better than midline this week.
28
Preparing for the 3-3 Box R (L) Over
FS C B M B S C W T N T Put the “S” in a bind. If he covers the TE, run Bubble, if he plays the pass by alignment, then run Outside Veer to the covered TE – there really is no handoff key to threaten a pull read.
29
Preparing for the 3-3 Box R (L) Over
FS C S C B M W T N T B The adjustment may be to get into a more traditional 5-2 look. Continue to run O.Veer Triple & look for matchups weak & quick game strong. QB counterkeep will keep ‘em honest in the run game. Also remember if you are Tackle over, you may get a TE Seam uncovered on the backside.
30
Preparing for the 3-3 Box Tank Ram (Lion)
FS C C B M B W T N T S Another way to put them in a Run/Pass bind. The FS must now choose to cover #2 or allow us to quick them to death. We still can run O.Veer Give/Keep (double option) without motion to the Strong side or run it as a triple with motion to the weak side. Also trap becomes a solid play here.
31
Preparing for the 3-3 Box Tank Ram (Lion)
FS C C B M B W T N T S Showing one of their potential adjustments to this formation, as the defense becomes increasingly perimeter conscience – hit them inside with Spin Trap or Midline.
