Write a few sentences about how old you think you’ll live to be and why. What kinds of things do you think influence how long a person lives? Which of these factors do you think a person has some control over? Which of these factors have something to do with a person’s health?

Explain Life Expectancy – the number of years of life remaining at any given age for a group of people Lifespan – the number of years he or she actually lives Survey To what age do you think someone in the US who’s 15 years old today will live?

Summarize According to the CDC, someone 15 years old will live another 64 to 65 years – average of 78.5 years. (Males – 76 years, Females – 81 years) Ask and Discuss Why do you think the average life expectancy is different for males and females?

Summarize Linked to behaviors – men are more reckless, use tobacco/alcohol, don’t seek medical attention when needed Women – have support system for stress, go to the doctor when needed, get routine health screenings Remember – these are just averages, you extend or reduce your life expectancy by the choices you make

Explain Things to consider about life expectancy – Quantity vs. Quality Quantity – amount of a person’s life Quality – all the things or aspects that make a person’s life enjoyable and meaningful Ask and Discuss What do you think contributes to a person’s quality of life?

Summarize Health isn’t just how your body feels and works – it has physical, mental/emotional, intellectual, social and spiritual dimensions All are important and have an effect on the quality of a person’s life Quality of life is more important than quantity of life

Physical Health – has to do with your body and how well it works Emotional/Mental Health – has to do with a person thinks, feels, and acts as he or she copes with life Social Health – has to do with relationships with others, including your family, friends, peers and the wider community Intellectual Health – has to do with your mind and learning Spiritual Health – has to do with how people find meaning and purpose in their lives
