2  TSW explain the difference between life expectancy and quality of life.  TSW describe factors that can affect quality of life.  TSW assess personal health- and wellness- related practices and behaviors that reduce or prevent health risks.

4  Write a few sentences about how old you think you’ll live to be and why.  What kinds of things do you think influence how long a person lives?  Which of these factors do you think a person has some control over?  Which of these factors have something to do with a person’s health?

5 Explain  Life Expectancy – the number of years of life remaining at any given age for a group of people  Lifespan – the number of years he or she actually lives Survey  To what age do you think someone in the US who’s 15 years old today will live?

6 Summarize  According to the CDC, someone 15 years old will live another 64 to 65 years – average of 78.5 years. (Males – 76 years, Females – 81 years) Ask and Discuss  Why do you think the average life expectancy is different for males and females?

7 Summarize  Linked to behaviors – men are more reckless, use tobacco/alcohol, don’t seek medical attention when needed  Women – have support system for stress, go to the doctor when needed, get routine health screenings  Remember – these are just averages, you extend or reduce your life expectancy by the choices you make

8 Explain  Things to consider about life expectancy – Quantity vs. Quality  Quantity – amount of a person’s life  Quality – all the things or aspects that make a person’s life enjoyable and meaningful Ask and Discuss  What do you think contributes to a person’s quality of life?

9 Summarize  Health isn’t just how your body feels and works – it has physical, mental/emotional, intellectual, social and spiritual dimensions  All are important and have an effect on the quality of a person’s life  Quality of life is more important than quantity of life

10  Physical Health – has to do with your body and how well it works  Emotional/Mental Health – has to do with a person thinks, feels, and acts as he or she copes with life  Social Health – has to do with relationships with others, including your family, friends, peers and the wider community  Intellectual Health – has to do with your mind and learning  Spiritual Health – has to do with how people find meaning and purpose in their lives
