Reptile Basics Reptile- an ectothermic vertebrate that has lungs and scaly skin, and fertilizes their eggs internally Examples of reptiles- snakes, turtles, tortoises, lizards, alligators, crocodiles Big thing about living on land- obtaining and retaining water…
5
Obtaining and Retaining Water
Skin and Kidneys Skin- reptiles have rough, dry skin covered with scales to keep water in body Kidneys- filter the blood to get rid of wastes in the form of urine without getting rid of too much water; urine is concentrated toxins Egg with a Shell- internal fertilization occurs, and amniotic eggs are laid Amniotic eggs- eggs with a leathery shell; this shell prevents the egg from drying out

Lizard and Snakes Lizards and Snakes- both have overlapping scales, and shed their skin; lizards have four legs though Obtaining Food Lizard- omnivores; some use sticky tongues to obtain food Snake- carnivores that inject venom into their prey; jaw bones spread apart very far to swallow an animal larger than itself
9
Lizards and Snakes Movement Lizards- have four legs so they walk
Snakes- slither by using the muscles found along their back; alternate their muscles
10
Alligators and Crocodiles
Difference between the two- alligators have long rounded snouts, and crocodiles have pointed snouts Obtaining Food- both are carnivores that often hunt at night Reproduction- unlike other reptiles, they take care of their eggs and hatched babies until they are ready to feed and protect themselves
11
Turtles and Tortoises Turtles vs. Tortoises: Tortoises generally live on land more Turtle- a reptile whose body is covered by a protective shell that includes the ribs and backbone A shell is used to protect the turtle from predators Turtles can be either carnivores, herbivores, or omnivores
12
Dinosaurs Reptiles are descendants of dinosaurs
It is even hypothesized that birds came from dinosaurs too! Much speculation as to how dinosaurs became extinct Comet Ice Age
