Developing young people through leadership How can leadership academies support the development of young people, helping them to make a valued contribution to the delivery of school and community sport.
3
Coach Official Team Manager workshop PPt Sept 2011 FINAL 3
4
Q – how can leadership academies support the development of young people? A – it depends on what the leadership academy is Does it involve all young people involved in L&V? Is it only for the most talented leaders? Is it selective by age? What does it aim to do? - celebrate, reward, train or deploy leaders?
5
Task: Discuss with the person next to you what your Leadership Academy looks like and aims to achieve Or if you are not involved in managing a Leadership Academy – what do you think it should look like and aim to achieve?
6
What did student leadership look like Some Training – Playleaders training, JSLA in some schools Some deployment – KS2 leaders helping deliver KS1 MS festivals, SiS community placements – limited success, KS4-5 students mainly supporting SSP events on an ad- hoc basis
7
What did we wish our leadership academy to be? All encompassing – all schools and all pupils involved in training and volunteering Not exclusive but recognise and reward those with talent and commitment Provide opportunities for talented leaders to make progress Identification, training, deployment and ongoing support Grow our workforce through trained, experienced, committed students
8
Missing link – KS3! Need to provide opportunities for KS2 leaders to progress not regress! Sustainable links between KS2 and KS4-5 Need to tap into biggest potential talent pool Providing a visual pathway for pupils in sports leadership and volunteering- why, when and what for?
