PRIMARY SPORTS MED TEAM – High School Athletic Trainer (AT) Team Doctor (MD) Athlete Coach

TEAM DOCTOR/ PHYSICIAN (MD) ATs work under Doctors (MD’s) supervision and/or direction MD Roles: Supervise AT Put together athlete’s medical history Actual injury diagnosis Determine if they are ready to play Be available – games, practices

ATHLETE They must be active participants in their recovery Do what’s necessary to prevent injuries

THE COACH Coach's roles: Ensure safe playing environment and equipment Teach proper technique First Aid and CPR Use and assist in Emergency Plan Knowledge of sports and biomechanics

WHO IS THE REST OF THE SPORTS MEDICINE TEAM? Can include all of the following: Nurse and school health services Orthopedist – bone and joint doctor Neurologist – brain and spine doctor Internist – internal organ doctor Family Medicine Physician Pediatrician – children’s doctor Podiatrist – foot doctor Physician’s assistant Dentist – teeth and mouth doctor Ophthalmologist – eye doctor

Strength and conditioning coach Biomechanist and Exercise Physiologist – study movement, body composition, etc Sport psychologist – sports can be stressful Physical Therapist – rehab specialist Nutritionist – food and drink specialist Equipment Personnel Referees Student Athletic Trainer

WHERE ARE SPORTS MED TEAMS FOUND? Schools (middle and secondary) Colleges and universities Sports Medicine Clinics Physician offices Professional and Olympic Sports Industrial/Commercial settings Performing Arts Military/Law Enforcement

STUDENT ATHLETIC TRAINERS What can you do? Learn as much as you can! Taping Wound care First aid/CPR Anatomy www.nata.org Get involved - volunteer! Scholarships for college
