What is a Museum A public institution for preserving and interpreting evidence of humans and their environments Museums are for: safeguarding human heritage, learning, and enjoyment They preserve, achieve, and display “Museums enable people to explore collections for inspiration, learning, and enjoyment. They are institutions that collect, safeguard, and make accessible artifacts and specimens, which they hold in trust for society.” -The Museum Association

Types of Museums There are many different types of museums Art museums, botanical gardens, children’s museums, history museums, historical houses, historical societies, living history sites, military museums, natural history museums, science museums, special interest museums, and university museums

Some Museums There are museums on every continent in the world Some famous museums: -Metropolitan Museum of Art-New York City -Beijing Museum of Natural History-Beijing, China -New Zealand National Maritime Museum -National Museum of Anthropology-Mexico City, Mexico -The Tate Museum-London, England

The Smithsonian Located in Washington DC Founded in 1846 World’s largest museum and research complex-has 19 museums and galleries, national zoological park, and 9 research facilities Motto: “Shaping the future by preserving our heritage, discovering new knowledge, and sharing our resources with the world” Some exhibits: Arts of Japan, The Art of Video Games, The Empress Dowager, and Race: Are We So Different?

United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Located in Washington DC Founded in 1993 “The Holocaust Memorial Museum is America’s national institute for the documentation, study, and interpretation of Holocaust history, and serves as this country’s memorial to the millions of people murdered during the Holocaust.” Some samples exhibits: Remember the Children: Daniel’s Story, A Dangerous Lie: The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, and State of Deception: The Power of Nazi Propaganda
