2. What is Reading Counts ? Reading Counts is a school-wide reading program where students earn points by reading books that are at a comfortable reading level and peak their interest.

3. How do I find an RC book? RC books in the library are marked with a yellow sticker – the sticker shows the reading range and how many points the book is worth. There are tons of fiction and non-fiction books available in Newton’s library!

4. How do I know my reading range? Your reading range is based on your MAPS test score. MAPS determines a score called a Lexile. Your range is 50 points above your Lexile and 100 points below. Your teacher can help you determine your Lexile score and reading range.

5. How do I know how many points I need? Your teacher will meet with you to discuss your reading goal, based on your most recent MAPS score. –With Reading Counts, you can set either a point goal or a book goal Your goal should be challenging, yet attainable

6. What if I want to read a book without a yellow sticker? If you find a really exciting book that is not yet on RC, see your teacher about completing an Alternate Assessment.

7. Other cool things about Reading Counts You may take a quiz up to 2 times (you must score 70% or better) You can print a list of recommended books based on your interests and level You, your teacher, and your parents can print reports to see how you’re doing

8. When do I read? At Newton, we expect every student to read at home for about 30 minutes per night (at least) –We also expect you to take a book to every class, so if you finish an assignment or test early, pick up your book! Reading Block! (Knight Time) –Come prepared with a book and expect to read for the whole time (not do homework or meet with teachers) Remember to fill out your goal sheet as you complete books!

9. How will I be graded? To determine your grade, you will turn in your goal sheet at the end of each quarter. –Your goal sheet will indicate the percentage of your goal that you met and determine your grade Remember, Reading Counts is 15% of your Language Arts grade!
