SRI and SRC! Enterprise Training: Powered by SAM
Welcome Hello. My name is ___________and I’d like to welcome you to Enterprise Training for Scholastic Reading Inventory and Scholastic Reading Counts! This training is for teachers and administrators who are already familiar with version 3.03 of these programs, both of which used the Scholastic Management Suite. Notice the new icons for both programs, which have changed in this edition. This is what they’ll look like on your desktop. Enterprise Edition has a new management system called the Scholastic Achievement Manager, or SAM. Today we’ll learn how to use SAM with the Enterprise versions of both SRI and SRC!
2
Training Objectives Learn about the Scholastic Achievement Manager (SAM), the management system for Enterprise Edition programs. Understand the key changes and improvements in SAM, including new terminology and additional reporting and management options. Use SAM to customize SRI and SRC!, generate reports, search for books, and create quizzes. Gain troubleshooting tips and continuing support information for SRI and SRC! Enterprise Edition software management. Today, I’m going to introduce you to SAM, and talk about the changes and improvements with this management system. Some of the terminology has changed, as well as some of the management and reporting options. I’ll take time to highlight and explain each of those changes. In addition, I’ll give you troubleshooting tips and support information for when you begin to use SAM to manage SRI and SRC! in your classrooms.

A Note About Correlations www.scholastic.com/dodea
Enterprise Edition supports the DoDEA English Language Arts Standards for Grades 3 through 6. You can view all of the various correlations on the DoDEA Web page. Go to scholastic.com/dodea, click the Correlations tab and use the drop-down menu under READ 180 [CLICK] to view the correlations for READ 180 and DoDEA Stage A Standards. [CLICK] Although the present correlation addresses READ 180 version 1.6, the Enterprise Edition correlations are currently in development, and will not change that much for teachers using just SRI and SRC! In addition, the correlation for READ 180 version 1.6 begins at Grade 4, and the correlations for Enterprise Edition will begin at Grade 3.

Agenda Part 1: All About SAM Part 2: Using SRI Enterprise Edition
Part 3: Using SRC! Enterprise Edition This is today’s agenda. We’ll talk about SAM first, then I’ll discuss the Enterprise Editions of both SRI and SRC!
5
Part 1: All About SAM SAM is the central management component that collects and organizes performance data across Scholastic programs. SAM manages the data associated with all of the schools, classes, groups and teachers using Scholastic programs. SAM enables you to: Easily manage rosters and access database information Track performance and generate reports for students, classes, and groups Locate instructional and professional development resources Relate state standards to Scholastic program content When your students work in Scholastic programs, SAM tracks their individual progress. Just like in the SMS, the reports are not only a tool for monitoring progress, but also for planning instruction and matching students to books. SAM also offers administrative features such as managing rosters, adjusting performance standards, finding resources for instructional development, and correlating standards to program content. Additionally, SAM’s new data migration feature “talks” to our SIS reporting system as administrators import and export data.
6
Part 1: All About SAM Enterprise SMS plus some …
How many of you recognize that screen? That’s right, it’s the home page for SMS. In the simplest terms, SAM is Enterprise SMS. [CLICK] SAM was created in order to provide a new face to the Enterprise Edition of Scholastic programs. SAM takes what was best about the SMS and provides new ways to support district-level management for administrators and strong, data-driven differentiated instruction. [CLICK] Although we’ll mainly discuss SRI and SRC! today, SAM is the management system for all of our Enterprise Edition products; SRI, SRC!, READ 180, and more. … and more

All About SAM New Terminology for Enterprise Edition
Before you said . . . Now you say. . . Access Permissions Buttons Tabs Login (to SMS) Sign In (to SAM) Menu Bar Quick Links Reading Level (in SRC!) Estimated Reading Level (in SRC!) Records Profiles Student Names SmartBar Teacher Quizzes (in SRC!) Teacher-Made Quizzes (in SRC!) Here is a list of some changes in how you used to refer to SMS functions, and how you refer to the same or similar functions in SAM. In addition, there are some aspects of the SMS that don’t appear in SAM. Functions like the SMS’s Easy Start no longer exist, and since the database is now maintained by the administrator of your network, there is no Data Utility in SAM. There are also new, more powerful functions of SAM that didn’t exist in the SMS, such as SmartBar navigation, the Resource Finder for in-class resources, Advanced Search for book titles and quizzes in the SRC! Book Expert, and interactive, on-screen reports.
8
All About SAM Signing In
Enter your Username and Password. Click Sign In. While the SMS had two access levels—school-wide administrator and teacher access—SAM extends to district-wide administrative access. You’ll be signing into SAM at the teacher level. To sign in to SAM, find the square icon on your teacher computer’s desktop that has a cute little dog’s face on it (his name is SAM). Double click this icon. To enter SAM, you will need to have a username and a password. This has been set up for you during installation of the Enterprise Edition. When the login screen appears, type: Your username: your first initial and last name with no space between. Your password: Your first and last initial. If you are the only person to use your teacher computer on a regular basis, you can speed up future sign-ins by clicking the check box to select Remember my Username, Password, and Settings. I should note that if you check this box, you can access SAM more easily, but this may mean that others may have easy access to the data you store in that SAM program installed on your computer. [CLICK] Click Sign In to begin work in SAM.
9
Getting Around SAM The Home Page
This is the SAM Home page. There are three ways to navigate SAM from the Home Page: the Quick Links, the Home Page Buttons, and the SmartBar. [CLICK] You can find the Quick Links in the upper right hand corner of any screen in SAM. Click these links to quickly return to the Home Page, view your Profile, exit SAM, and get help. Another way to navigate SAM is to click the Home Page Buttons. [CLICK] Click these buttons (or the tabs along the top of any SAM screen) to access different information on: Roster provides detailed information about your students’ performance in Scholastic programs Reports provides data about your students’ performance in Scholastic programs Resources has printables for your students, classrooms, and professional development purposes Book Expert has a searchable database of book titles and quizzes to support your curriculum needs The third and most important way to navigate SAM is by using the SmartBar [CLICK], which is the core of SAM navigation. It appears as the left-hand column on every SAM screen and is the quickest route to displaying information about schools and classes using Scholastic programs.
10
Getting Around SAM Using the SmartBar
Single-click either the Classes, Groups, or Students tab to reveal enrollments. Double-click any name on the SmartBar to select it. The SmartBar gets its “smarts” from the way it quickly sorts profile and reports information. The choices you will have are based on the level of permissions you have to SAM. For teachers, this includes Student Settings, Class/Group Settings, and your personal Teacher Setting. The SmartBar works using a “top-down system.” This means that all of the information on the SmartBar is related and the information contained in the tabbed lists beneath are dependent on the tabs above them. Follow the steps on-screen to access student and class information. [CLICK] Now use the tabs along the top of the main display to view profiles or reports information for the student, class, or group you’ve chosen.
11
Getting Around SAM Adding Students to SAM
Double-click the class name in the SmartBar to see the Class Profile screen. Click the Add a Student link under Manage Roster. Now that you are familiar with the basic management functions of SAM, I’ll show you some tasks you’ll need to know to get started. The first thing you’ll need to do is add student information into SAM, then enroll students in programs. Follow along with the steps on-screen to add a student to SAM. 1. Double-click the class name in the SmartBar to see the Class Profile screen. [CLICK] 2. Click the Add a Student link under Manage Roster.
12
Getting Around SAM Adding Students to SAM
Enter information in the Profile tab of the Add a Student window. Use the check boxes to assign a student to classes or groups. 5. Click Save. Because SAM can be used with other data management systems, every student needs a unique student ID, username, and password. You’ll need to enter students’ usernames and passwords. Make sure to assign students to a class or teacher under Add to Classes & Groups. [CLICK] Follow along with the rest of the steps on-screen to finish adding one or three students to SAM.
13
Getting Around SAM Enrolling Classes in Programs
Click the Manage Enrollment link under Manage Roster on the right of the Class Profile screen. Use the check boxes to enroll students in programs. Click Save & Return to confirm enrollment and return to the class profile screen. Now that you have added students to SAM and associated them with classes, it’s time to enroll them in SRI and SRC! Follow the steps on-screen to enroll your students in SRI and SRC! 1. Click the Manage Enrollment link under Manage Roster on the right of the Class Profile screen. [CLICK TWICE] 2. Use the check boxes to enroll students in programs. 3. Click Save & Return to confirm enrollment and return to the Class Profile screen. If you would like to enroll all of the students in a program at once, just click the check box beneath the program name in the header of the Manage Enrollment window. Your class’s enrollment status will appear in the Usage Summary on your Class Profile screen.
14
Running Reports Using the Reports Index
Now that your students are enrolled in classes and programs, you can run reports based on their progress. There are six different types of reports that can run in SAM: Progress Monitoring, Diagnostic Reports (only available in READ 180 reporting), Instructional Planning, Alerts and Acknowledgments, School-to-Home, and Management. The Reports Index lists a selection of recommended reports based on your SmartBar selection. The Reports Index is organized by the Scholastic programs, report types, and dates of reports last run. [CLICK] Clicking the blue Reports tab from any screen in SAM will open the reports index. (If you are on the Home Page, click the blue Reports button.) Browsing for Reports [CLICK] Double-click the name of a Student, Group, or Class on the SmartBar from the Reports Index screen [CLICK] to change the reports Scholastic recommends for your selection. If you’ve selected a student, the Reports Index will show reports for that student. If you’ve selected a class in the SmartBar, you’ll see reports for that class. You can use the pull-down menu next to Show at the top of the Reports Index main display to move between Classroom and Student Reports, or you can choose to view all reports available to you.
15
Running Reports Viewing On-Screen Reports
Click the button to the left of the report you wish to run. Select a time period or the custom option. Click Run Report once you have made your selections. You can adjust the time period for many of the reports you run in SAM. [CLICK] You’ll see the time period selections on the right of the screen once you select a report. These are particular for each report. For many reports, you can customize the time period for your specific classroom or instructional needs. If you select the Custom option, you will see the Calendar Tool pop-up on screen. This option is not available for all reports. Below the time period selections, the Report Description gives some more information about how to best use each report. One of the main differences between SAM and SMS is the new way you can “view” reports. You can still print out copies of the data to share and maintain records, but with SAM you can view and sort the data in reports on your computer screen as well. Follow the steps on-screen to run an interactive report.
16
Running Reports Printing On-Screen Reports
Click the Print Preview (PDF) link located in the upper right hand corner of the white portion of the screen. Click File from the Adobe Acrobat Reader menu at the top left of the screen. Choose Print in the menu to print the report. To run the same report for another student, group, or class, double-click the name of the student, group, or class in the SmartBar and the reports will rerun according to your selection. [CLICK] In many of the on-screen reports in SAM, you can sort the columns to view the data in ascending or descending order. Each report has a Purpose and Follow-Up, as well as a list of Related Reports, which you can access by clicking the Related Reports link along the top of the screen. You can also sort report data by the date last run column and by reports run most recently. When you print the report, however, the data will not maintain the sorting. Follow the directions on-screen to view and print reports. 1. Click the Print Preview (PDF) link located in the upper right-hand corner of the white portion of the screen. 2. Click File from the Adobe Acrobat Reader menu at the top left of the screen. [CLICK] 3. Choose Print in the menu to print the report.
17
Running Reports Saving On-Screen Reports
Click Save a Copy (PDF) at the top of the report screen. Click Save to save this report in the Reports Index. You will then see a confirmation screen. Click View Saved Reports to see all the reports you have saved for the student, or click Return to return to the student’s on-screen report. You can also save a copy of the report to to administrators, parents, or guardians. Follow the steps on-screen to save a copy of a report. [CLICK] Once you have saved a report, click the View Saved Reports link from the Reports Index to access saved reports for any student highlighted in the SmartBar. If you’d like to a copy of the report, just save it to your computer and attach the report file to your like you would a Microsoft Word or Excel file.
18
SAM’s Resources What’s in Resources?
The screen you see here is the Resource Finder, accessible from the SAM Home Page. This is your tool for locating resources that you can use with Scholastic programs and for professional development. [CLICK] Resources are coordinated with the Teacher Bookshelf materials for some Scholastic programs. Every page in these books has a keyword at the bottom, like an AOL keyword. Typing a keyword in the SAM Keyword box will allow you to go straight to a particular resource or set of resources. [CLICK] The Advanced Search enables you to tailor your resource searches by resource type, strand, skill, lesson plan, passage, graphic organizer, or skill, e.g., making inferences. Before using the Advanced Search feature, you must first select a program using the pull-down menu. The SRI/SRC! searchable materials available in the Resource Finder are instructional software resources, such as the SRI & SRC! Educator’s Guides and the SRC! Software Manual.
19
SAM’s Book Expert Searching for Books
As in the SMS, the Book Expert puts the books in the SRC! database at your fingertips. The Book Expert allows you to search through over 30,000 book titles and customized lists. Click the Books tab along the top of any screen in SAM to use this feature to search for books based on grade level, genre, reading skills, and other criteria. You can also use the Book Expert and Quiz Manager to print book lists and labels, so you can send lists home, guide students to choose books in the library, and post lists in class for topic or genre studies. [CLICK] We’ll talk more about the Book Expert in the SRC! section of the presentation, but much like the Resource Finder, you can search for book titles using key terms, or by using Advanced Search to customize your search.
20
Part 2: Using SRI Enterprise Edition
Now I’ll introduce you to how SAM works with SRI Enterprise Edition.
21
Using SRI Enterprise Edition How Has SRI Changed?
The SRI student experience in Enterprise Edition has a brand new look. It’s still a research-based assessment tool that measures reading comprehension in Lexiles, adapts to student performance, and matches students to text. Each passage is followed by one embedded comprehension question. These are drawn from an item bank of over 4,600 questions, so each test is unique. Students must use a variety of comprehension strategies and higher-order thinking skills, including making inferences, drawing conclusions, and demonstrating vocabulary knowledge in context. Students receive immediate feedback through a personalized recommended reading list, based on indicated interests, measured reading level in Lexile measure, and grade level. One of the changes in Enterprise Edition is that students now need to log in with a username and password. Another change is that both teachers and administrators can generate more than 20 performance reports containing multiple reading comprehension measures.
22
Using SRI Enterprise Edition How Has SRI Changed?
One of the changes is that students now need to log in with a username and password to begin the test. There are also now over 4,500 test items in the student experience to more effectively gauge reading levels.
23
Using SRI Enterprise Edition New Teacher Materials
The SRI Enterprise Edition software also comes with some new teacher materials. You can find these in your Enterprise teacher materials. The SRI Educator’s Guide is a comprehensive guide that introduces you to the Scholastic Reading Inventory and provides ongoing support for administering the test and interpreting data for intervention and instruction. The guide also contains reproducibles to use in your classroom. The Lexile Framework map is a graphic representation of the reading continuum, ranging from 100 Lexiles to 1200 Lexiles. This represents early first-grade texts to advanced graduate school texts. The Lexile Framework represents an absolute scale of reading comprehension. Books are placed on this continuum according to Lexile, and SRI allows you to test a student and use the same Lexile scale to place them on the continuum. The SAM Quick Reference Guide is a handy tool that provides information for adding and enrolling students in SAM, generating data reports, locating books, and accessing resources.

26
SRI Settings in SAM Set an Estimated Reading Level
Double-click a student’s name in the SmartBar. Click the Settings link next to the SRI icon in the Programs Menu. Earlier we practiced adding students to SAM. Before they take the SRI test, it is important to adjust individual settings. The most important setting before a student takes an SRI test is Estimated Reading Level. Select one student from the SmartBar and click the Settings link under Programs [CLICK] to open the SRI Settings window. [CLICK] This will allow you to apply settings for this student in SRI. This setting helps target the computer-adaptive test for this student and decreases the test time. Follow the directions on-screen to set an Estimated Reading Level for students.
27
SRI Settings in SAM Set an Estimated Reading Level
3. Use the pull-down menu next to Estimated Reading Level in the Test Settings menu to select a reading level. 4. Click Okay. 5. Click Save & Return to return to the student’s Profile screen. It is important to estimate reading levels in order to correctly place students in SRI. If you teach a class where most of the students are the same reading level, you can simplify this targeting process. Model how to select the class name on the SmartBar and go to SRI Settings window. If all or many of your students are at the same reading level, target them at the same time by selecting the class name in the SmartBar and repeating steps 2 and 3. Then go back and adjust for students that have different reading levels. Set the estimated reading level for the whole class and then select the students with different reading levels to adjust their SRI reading levels individually.
28

The SRI Student Experience Choosing Book Interests & Taking the Practice Test
Log in to SRI. Select categories of interest. Read along with the directions, then click Next to begin. Click OK to answer the practice questions one at a time. Once you have enrolled and adjusted the settings for your students in SRI, they can log in to the program, choose book interests on the Book Interest screen, and take the test. [CLICK] The first time they log on they will receive a practice test before the actual test begins. If students incorrectly answer a practice question, they are prompted to ask a teacher for help. If students stop midway through the SRI test, it will pick up where they left off when they log back in. This is good for students who are experiencing frustration or have trouble concentrating, as well as if there is an unforeseen interruption in the middle of the test, such as a fire drill.
31
Using the SRI Grading Tool Adding Test Scores to SAM
Double-click a student’s name in the SmartBar. Click the Grading Tools link next to SRI icon in the Programs Menu. FA’s profile screen Once a student finishes an SRI computer test, their scores will appear in SAM. SRI Troubleshooting Tips
Q: Some of my students receive error messages while they take the test. What does it mean when my students receive the following error codes: !50, !53, c41, or L4? A: These errors normally occur due to interruptions in the network connection or increased network traffic. If your students receive these error messages, they should simply try to do their work again. If these error messages persist, please contact your network administrator to investigate any potential network problems. Here are some commonly encountered issues in SRI Enterprise Edition. Let’s go over them.
34
SRI Troubleshooting Tips
Q: In Enterprise Edition, why does my student receive a message that they are already logged in on another computer when they are not? A: If the student application is abnormally terminated, the student’s server login may have to time out before they can log back in. Please be sure that students are not exiting the program by force-quitting or using ctrl-alt-del. This error message will normally disappear after a few minutes.
35

Troubleshooting for SRC!
Q: Why does SAM time out when I’m trying to save a quiz that I’ve created in the Teacher Made Quiz tool? A: This happens because as each question and answer set is created in the Teacher Made Quiz tool, data is being cached, or hidden, before it is saved to the database. Therefore, SAM may time out if no data has been written to the server in the past 20 minutes. It is recommended that you save data as you work by clicking the Save button after entering each question and answer set. his will maintain a connection to the server.
