Jesus the Preacher “Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God” (Mark 1:14)

God’s Word is Manifested through Preaching 2

Preaching was central to Jesus’ work, Matt 4:17, 23; 9:35 ◦ Synagogues, seaside and mountains, boat, road, village to village, in the temple and in homes, by a well and in a field... ◦ Drew large crowds, yet his preaching offended many who turned away, Lk 14:25-27; Jno 6:60, 66 3

Why should you care how Jesus preached? God saves through preaching, 1 Cor 1:21 God wants us to listen to gospel preaching, 2 Tim 4:2-4 ◦ Do not be satisfied with less You may have to help select a preacher some day – for what should you look? ◦ What do you want in a preacher? When you preach – what do you try to accomplish? 4

Authoritative Preaching The authority of heaven was behind what He said, Jno 12:48-50 ◦ This gave his preaching certainty and clarity, cf. 1 Cor 1:23; 2 Cor 11:3 ◦ Preach the word of truth with bold assurance: you have the backing of heaven! 1 Tim 4:11; 5:7; 6:2; Titus 2:15 5

Urgent Preaching Urgent in content, Luke 4:16-19 Urgent in manner, Jno 7:28, 37; 12:44 ◦ Arrested attention / Compelling message ◦ Conveyed the need for immediate action ◦ Gospel preachers must not forget why they preach – to save souls! Rom 1:16-17 6

Instructive Preaching Jesus imparted God’s will, Matt 4:23 ◦ Parables, Matt 13:9-10 ◦ Plainly, Jno 16:29-30 Because people did not know God’s word ◦ They didn’t need clichés, jokes, pep talks – needed God’s word! Acts 10:33 ◦ Heard Jesus... Heard the word of God 7

Compassionate Preaching For sinners without compromise, Lk 15:1-2 ◦ Stern, direct and gentle, Jno 8:7, 11 (4:7-26) ◦ He made time to teach:  Nicodemus (Jno 3:2); Zacchaeus (Lk 19:1-5); Children (Matt 19:13-15) ◦ Loved those who turned away, Mk 10:21 ◦ Forgiveness toward executioners, Lk 23:34 ◦ Be aware of the plight of the lost and the weak, Rom 10:1-2; 1 Ths 2:7-8; 5:14; 2 Tim 2:24-26 8

Vehement Preaching Fervent, vigorous denunciation of sin ◦ NOT: “Can’t hurt feelings” (Matt 15:12-14) ◦ NOT: “Must leave certain topics alone” (Acts 20:27) ◦ Heaven’s woes against sinners, Matt 23  Yet, Jesus wept for sinners, Matt 23:37 9

Demanding Preaching Demanded repentance, Mk 1:15; 6:12; Lk 13:3, 5... Luke 24:47 Demanded self-denial, Matt 16:24 ◦ Prerequisite to discipleship, Matt 10:37-39; 19:21-22  “Preaching which asks for nothing will get nothing.” Demanded one way, Jno 14:6 10

Plain Preaching He reached hearts with the gospel ◦ He was at home with fishermen and farmers, carpenters and merchants, religious leaders, tax collectors and children, politicians and paupers ◦ People understood what he said (Eph 5:17) ◦ Neither try to impress with eloquence or cheapen gospel with coarseness, 1 Cor 2:2; 2 Cor 11:3 11

Preach the way Jesus preached! Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you. 12
