WIGOS monitoring a pilot project WMO; Name of Department (ND)
2
Context Roadmap and action items from WIGOS QM WS 5.GOS QM Pilots (SG-QM) Pilot (2015 - ECMWF, NCEP, others?) [R.Grumbine, D.Richardson] Participating NWP centers to agree on: Information to exchange; Format for exchange; Feasiblity and commencement.
3
WIGOS Monitoring There layers Level 1 : WIS (connection layer) Level 2 : WIGOS (message layer) Level 3 : WIGOS (content layer) We are here
4
WIGOS Monitoring - report 1.Information to exchange For each received bulletin 6h exchange frequency 2.Format to exchange CSV Webservice / FTP 3.Feasibility and commencement .. Station idDateHourLat/longVariableStatusCenter
5
Approach Develop pilot @WMO.. Visibility Goal: fix issues dicovered by monitoring Improve and vombine with already existing monitoring systems (SMM, AGM, SAM) 5
6
Approach Periodically receive all not yet processed files (from ECMWF, NCEP) Determine share of missing observations Store 1 row per center, variable, (type) and 6h period in database Interactive website shows stats by station/country/region on map and table Also show historical development Show «life» status of observing network Operations could/should evenutlly be taken over by a NWP centre or other interested centre
7
Aproach – difficulties What is missing is difficult to tell, as there is no clear baseline VolA/oscar SMM works only on RBSN bulletins (where # of observations is known) As more observations are made it is increasingly difficult to identify which are e.g synoptic ones Operations? (technology is heavy) What about existing monitoring?
8
Some thoughts Constitutes some shift.. Observations only «matter» when they make it to a NWP center No bias towards a particular center as user can select which one.. Acting on the information is most important component (link with FMS?) How (much?) to link to OSCAR?
