BEANSS PROJECT Ms. Williams 5 th Grade

Introduction, Goals, and Research Stage One

Research Journal-Stage One  What do I need to include in my research?  Sources used (where did you find your information)  Did you answer the research question prompts?  Were you and your partner able to come up with goals for your project bases on the research?  How much research do I need?  You should have AT LEAST 2-3 pages of research notes!

What should my research look like?  Diagrams of different security system components  Notes on how security systems work  Diagrams of different circuits (parallel, series)  Notes on how circuits work…what kind of circuit should you use? How does it function? What parts do you need (battery, wire, bulb,…)

Example of Research This is a series circuit. It has one constant flow of electricity. The flow of electricity is called a current. To build this circuit I need at least one light bulb, wire, and a battery. I also will a switch, which needs to be made from a conductor material. The switch will allow me to turn the light bulb off. It looks like security systems use a parallel circuit, so this type of circuit may not be best, but it’s still an option. This is a series circuit. It has one constant flow of electricity. 6 Research: Cost Analysis  How much do my materials cost? (look at your materials list on the packet)  How much will it cost too make one system/circuit?  How much should I charge the customer to make a profit?

Design, Create, Make it Better! Stage Two—Building Circuits

Stage Two  STEM design plan  Complete the entire STEM design plan packet— make sure to include sketches and drawing!  Build your circuit and make it better!

Stage Three—Schematics

Drawing Your Schematic  Include the correct key for drawing each component of your circuit  Draw an exact schematic of your circuit  Schematic Key: Example on next slide

Schematic Key

Putting it all together! Stage Four—Presentation

Stage Four  Now you are ready to create your presentation to the client!  You will need to design a poster for your presentation. Your poster should include your:  Introduction and goals  Parts of your system  Cost analysis and cost for the client  Schematic of your working component

Stage Four: Example Poster Introduction and Goals: (introduce yourselves and the company) What will your system accomplish? System Overview: My system includes: -camera -keypad -window sensors System Overview: My system includes: -camera -keypad -window sensors System Schematic Cost Analysis: Total Cost: $ Customer Cost: $ Company Profit: $ Cost Analysis: Total Cost: $ Customer Cost: $ Company Profit: $

Questions?  When is the project due?  The Tuesday after Spring Break, 4-13-15  Can my poster be any color?  Yes  Does my poster need to look exactly like the example?  No, but you do need to include all the parts of the example poster
