Section IV: Using Problem-Solving Tools to Enhance Learning Chapter Nine: Databases Learner Objectives At the completion of study, learners will be able to : –discuss research that supports the use of databases in K-12 instruction –use terminology and capabilities associated with databases –examine lessons that incorporate use of databases into teaching and learning –plan and develop a lesson activity that aligns with state curriculum and NETSS standards and requires student use of databases –determine appropriate methods of adapting databases for special learners

Section IV: Using Problem-Solving Tools to Enhance Learning Chapter Nine: Databases Frameworks: What we know Databases are electronic filing systems that can be used to organize, store, and search for information. Research studies report that databases facilitate the –use of higher-order thinking skills –development of research skills –development of problem-solving skills –accomplish constructivist principles –analyze relationships and look for trends
4
Section IV: Using Problem-Solving Tools to Enhance Learning Chapter Nine: Databases Frameworks: What we know Teachers use databases to –Organize artifacts for teacher portfolios –Organize student directories –Create mail merges for large mailings –Organize hardware and software titles –Develop bibliographies of books –Create student assignments inquiry-based student research projects
5
Section IV: Using Problem-Solving Tools to Enhance Learning Chapter Nine: Databases Frameworks: What we know Students use databases to –Develop research skills Complete research projects in language arts, science, and social studies –Develop problem solving skills –Develop organizational skills Organize personal collections –CDs, rocks, dolls, stamps, coins, etc Organize directories
6
Section IV: Using Problem-Solving Tools to Enhance Learning Chapter Nine: Databases Basics: Organization Databases are organized into Fields, Records, and Files –Fields are the categories of a database –A group of fields make up a record –A group of records are combined to make up a file.
7
Section IV: Using Problem-Solving Tools to Enhance Learning Chapter Nine: Databases Basics: Capabilities Databases provide easier access to information, answers to questions, and customize letters and produce reports. –Easier Access to information Information sorting –Report Summarizes the information into a readable format –Query Permits the selection of criteria and find any and all records that match the criteria –Mail Merge Allows the customization of letters
8
Section IV: Using Problem-Solving Tools to Enhance Learning Chapter Nine: Databases Constructing the Database 1.Plan the database 2.Construct the fields 3.Design the layout view 4.Research to find the data and record on a data sheet. 5.Log the data 6.Develop queries to find answers
9
Section IV: Using Problem-Solving Tools to Enhance Learning Chapter Nine: Databases Constructing a Mail Merge Creating a merge is saves time by personalizing a letter with information provided in the database. 1.Open the database (student directory) 2.Open a blank word processing document 3.Begin to write the letter. 4.Insert the appropriate fields in the letter where the database information will be placed. 5.Finish the letter inserting fields from the database as needed. 6.Merge the documents and print the information.

Section IV: Using Problem-Solving Tools to Enhance Learning Chapter Nine: Databases Databases in the Classroom Sites provided here provide information about using a database in the classroom. More is provided at On the Web: Databases Using Computer Databases in the Classroom –Offers advantages of using databases in the classroom. Creating a Database, Grades 4-5 –Lesson example of using a database in conjunction with an existing curriculum Famous North Carolinians: Grade 4 Searching a Database –Lesson plan that includes searching a database
