History Origin: A Spanish explorer, Ponce de Leon, discovered Florida in 1513. Florida got it's name from Ponce de Leon because when he got to Florida, he saw all of the sun-flowers so he named it La Florida (which if sunflower is Spanish). Ratified: March 3,1845 Statehood: March 3, 1845
