Facts Location: –Just off the New Jersey coast in the Hudson River Originally known as Gull Island by the Native Americans and Oyster Island by Dutch and English colonists

Brief History Owned privately by Samuel Ellis in the 1770s Bought by the U.S. government in 1808 Became a military fortification just before the War of 1812

Brief History From 1892-1954, twelve million immigrants enter America through Ellis Island Annie Moore, a 15 year old Irish girl was the first person to be processed at Ellis Island

The Process People were taken from the ships by ferry to Ellis Island Immigrants had the papers inspected and health checked Only 2% of immigrants were not allowed to enter the U.S.
