THE PRESENT SIMPLE TENSE
3
Present tense is further divided into four parts
Simple
4
Present SimpleTense We use simple present tense to talk about things in general. Ex: Nurses look after the patients in hospitals. Children like ice-cream We use it to say that something happens repeatedly or for habitual actions or daily activities I usually go to the market at weekends. Paul wakes up at 5 in the morning. We use it to say that something is true in general. The earth goes round the sun.
5
THE PRESENT SIMPLE TENSE (Affirmative)
Peter works on his basket every day (He) .
6
The present simple affirmative
Children like ice-cream very much (They).
7
See the table for further clarification we use subject+base form of verb in affirmative sentences.

8
Present simple More examples I go to school every day.
She speaks English fluently. The sun rises in the east. (It) Paper burns easily. (It) Water boils at 100 degrees celcius. (It) My parents work in a hospital (They)

You Work? We they Does *He/she Work ? Not works *It Work? Not works
14
THE PRESENT SIMPLE TENSE (Negative)
SHE DOESN’T WORK AS A DOCTOR, SHE WORKS AS A TEACHER.

We use sub+do/does+not+base form of verb for negative sentences
Do/doesn’t Base form of verb I Don’t Work. we You They He/she Doesn’t Work. Not works It
16
Negative sentences We use do/does to make negative sentences.

17
Remember We use the present simple to talk about
→regular, repeated activities or situations Susan goes to school every day →things that are generally or always true The River Ebro flows into the Mediterranean sea
18
Remember In the third person singular affirmative the verb has a final -s/-es She goes to school everyday We form the negative with don’t (doesn’t in the 3rd person singular). They don’t like sweets/ She doesn´t live in Madrid We form questions with Do…?(Does …?in the 3rd person singular). Does she eat sweets? Do you like football?
19
Some more use of Present simple
We use present simple with adverbs of frequency when we say how often we do things For ex: In the summer John usually plays tennis. NEVER SOMETIMES OFTEN USUALLY ALWAYS
20
Pattern: subject + adverb + verb
Thomas and Philip always begin their day at 7 o’clock. She usually plays basketball on Mondays. Peter often watches TV at breakfast. They never go home on weekdays. We sometimes play football. With the verb TO BE we use a different pattern Pattern: subject + am/is/are+ adverb Thomas and Philip are always busy at school. They are never late for their activities. He is usually ready for breakfast at 7 o’clock. We are often in the music room during the breaks. James is sometimes tired at the end of the day.
