2 How did this document come about? Following the terrible events of the Second World War, especially the killings of 6 millions Jews by Hitler and the Nazis, many countries in the world wanted to create document outlining the rights that ALL people should have, wherever they lived in the world. The document was signed in December 1948 following years of discussion and redrafting. This document is now the foundation of international human rights law.
