1 NATUROPATHY and HOMEOPATHY

2 NATUROPATHY “The doctor of the future will give no medicine but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame in proper diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease.” Thomas Alva Edison

3 NATUROPATHY It is a system of medicine. It is a way of life.
It is based on: Individual responsibility Individual education The focus is on: Health maintenance Disease prevention

4 NATUROPATHY The basic concept goes back to the Hippocratic school of medicine (400 BC). According to Hippocrates, it is important to: Know what sort of person has a disease than to know what sort of disease a person has. Please stop at this point and think about what he is telling us. Then search around yourself, to see how often you see individuals that refer to themselves as their disease. In other words, their identity is their disease. For example: I have CFS, RA, GERD, the lists goes on and on.

5 NATUROPATHY Naturopathy history dates back to 1900, when founder Benedict Lust, a German physician, established the first Naturopathic College in the U.S.A. The principle of college was based on medicine and the way of life

6 NATUROPATHY By early 1900, there were more than 20 naturopathic schools in the USA. , Naturopathic journals gave diet direction such as: Low fat diet High fiber diet Low red meat

7 NATUROPATHY 1940 - 1950 was a dark age for naturopathy due to:
Antibiotics Vaccines Medications

8 NATUROPATHY By 1970, the focus changed again to naturopathy. This change was due to: The importance of nutrition Healthy life styles Environmental toxins and the need for detoxification General public’s demand for more natural treatment. The birth of alternative medicine as the result of above factors.

9 NATUROPATHY Nature means “not artificial but lifelike;” and Pathy means, “healing crises.” We have two branches in this field. Naturopathic Physician Traditional Naturopathic Doctors

10 NATUROPATHIC PHYSICIAN
Education: Four year program after college degree. The first two years, are almost like medical school You learn courses in: Anatomy, cell biology, nutrition, physiology, pathology, neurosciences, histology, pharmacology, biostatistics, epidemiology and public health and alternative therapies. The second part of your education is more focused on Naturopathy. Naturopathic physicians are licensed in only 15 States; be aware of the implications for your state.” The best way to get accurate information is check with the school and state in which you want to practice. Generally you are learning about: Herbs Homeopathy Energy medicine Prescription medications

11 TRADITIONAL NATUROPATHY DOCTOR
Preparation: Students can take their courses through correspondence courses, like an anatomy course. Students should have an undergraduate degree in another field. A traditional Naturopathic doctor is one who employs a therapeutic system which does not use drugs, but employs natural forces such as light, heat, air, water, massage, and diet. Graduates of correspondence schools or naturopathic schools other than those listed in the text may refer to themselves as Naturopaths, but they will not be allowed to practice naturopathic medicine or be licensed in any of the 15 states that license Naturopathic doctors.

12 NATUROPATHY Generally both licensed naturopathic physicians and traditional naturopathic doctors believe that diseases are caused by: An inner accumulation of toxins Body structural imbalances Emotional stresses Detrimental lifestyles, i.e., smoking, drinking, eating too much, etc. Believing we are indestructible (Just not caring about our body, too much food, too much sex, too much of everything.)

13 NATUROPATHY Failing to consider the consequences of simple daily actions such as: The food we eat The occupations we attend The way we amuse ourselves Indeed, more substances, imbalances, or psychological problems are found to be illness producing. Conditions of “Disease” which were once thought to be acts of God, are now determined to be actions of humankind upon itself.

14 NATUROPATHY Naturopathic philosophy is that the ultimate goal of any type of wellness practitioner is to encourage the body’s own life force to cooperate more efficiently within the individual. Within this context, naturopathy is an holistic endeavor with an emphasis on nutritional counseling that is both detoxifying and restorative, followed by further consultations to other practitioners as needed.

15 NATUROPATHY In short: The client learns what aspects of a lifestyle are counter productive to wellness, then modalities are employed to rid the body of potential harmful substances. These modalities may include: Nutritional and herbal supplements Aromatherapy Fasting Body work Breathing techniques and herbal baths Meditation and exercise program

16 HOMEOPATHY

17 HOMEOPATHY Homeopathy basic law is “Similia Similibus Curantur,” which means “like is cured by like.” Homeopathy was born of Dr. Samuel Hahnemann’s ( ) own experience. Dr. Hahnemann was a German physician and a chemist. Dr. Hahnemann ( ) Founder of Homeopathy Source:

18 HOMEOPATHY The origin Homeopathy is from the Greek words:
“Omoios”, which means “ similar” and “Pathos”, which means “ feeling.” Homoeopathy represents action through stimulation. Through a very small impulses, the body is stimulated to react. Many experiments shows that it is possible to influence symptoms of disease with homeopathic potencies of a medicinal substance in such a way to affect physical, emotional, and mental level of manifestation.

19 HOMEOPATHY Homeopathy practice is increased in the USA since 1980s.
Homeopathy is practiced in the world, especially in: Europe Latin America Asia Great Britain (The Royal family use homeopathy before using any other medication). The homeopathic market has increased in USA recently, and it is estimated that patients will spend about $ 200 million a year for homeopathic preparations. Not all the homeopathic remedies are regulated by FDA, and the majority of remedies are available as over-the-counter medications.

20 HOMEOPATHY How Homeopathy works: According to the law of “Similars”
Large amount of substance that cause illness in a healthy person, can cure illness in a very small dose in a sick person. In other word, the homeopathy remedies stimulate a person’s self-healing ability. According to the Law of “infinitesimals” Homeopathic remedies use through a process of serial dilution. The more dilution occur: the more potent remedy will be the outcome (more effective). Example of dilution are: 1 X (low potencies), 6X, 30X, 200X, 1000X (high Potencies)

21 VIEW OF HEALTH AND ILLNESS
Homeopathy is a treatment regime. Homeopathy remedies will increase natural healing response to undo the symptoms. It works by stimulation of immune and defense response, to resolve the symptoms (problems). It works almost like immunization and allergy treatment in conventional medicine.

22 DIAGNOSTIC METHODS It is necessary to assess the whole person: Physical, emotional, and mental Many factors may be the cause of illness: Examples are: Nutritional imbalance Emotional imbalance Environmental stress Many signs and symptoms need to be looked at. Some examples are: Posture Dress Facial expression Tone of voce Rate of speech So, the physical exam is head–to–toe assessment including laboratory and other diagnostic tools.

23 DIAGNOSTIC METHODS Generally, the symptoms are classified in three major groups: General physical symptoms Local symptoms Mental and emotional symptoms

24 DIAGNOSTIC METHODS Example of general physical symptoms are:
Sleep problem Appetite problem Lack of energy Imbalanced temperature Generalized body ache

25 DIAGNOSTIC METHODS Examples of local symptoms are:
Complaints in one parts of the body: Swelling in the right or left elbow Pain in the right or left leg Shortness of breath Heart palpitation Cough

26 DIAGNOSTIC METHODS Examples of mental and emotional symptoms are:
Anxiety Irritability Anger Tearfulness Isolation Suspiciousness

27 TREATMENT It is advised to use homeopathy in conjunction with conventional treatment. Different person, with the same type of symptoms, may be treated differently. It is depend on physical, mental and emotional symptoms. The goal of treatment is to find a remedy for a particular patient with particular symptoms. For example, two different persons with the same symptoms may get different remedies: it depends on other factors mentioned above. A practitioner using homeopathic treatment should have knowledge and experience of using different remedies for different symptoms.

28 TREATMENT Homeopathy is also used for pet’s treatment, but it should be supervised by practitioner who is knowledgeable in the field.

29 SUMMARY “Miracles do not happen in contradiction of nature, but in contradiction to what we know about nature.” Saint Augustine
