Understanding & Using the Elements of Art Line can be presented in many ways. 1. Contour Line: Involves three basic types of line? Vertical Line: A line that has right angles to the horizon. A vertical line is straight up and down. Diagonal Line: A line that starts at opposite corners of the box and connect to opposing starting points Horizontal Line: A line that’s drawn from left to right. Children will know these lines as Zigzag, Wiggly, Wavy Curly,

2. Gesture Line: Quick free flowing line Aka,squiggly lines or scribble. Henri Toulouse Lautrec was masterful at this technique. Look at pg.22 for examples. Big Sky by MusickMusick

3. Implied Line: Directs a visual path with disconnecting lines, yet allowing the eye to move around the work of art. The print on pg 23 is a good example of this technique. Serenity by Musick
