Victoria’s Secret all started with a 30 year old man named Roy Raymond. Raymond graduated from Stanford Graduate school of Business. He wanted to buy lingerie as a gift for his wife without feeling uncomfortable going into a department store. In the mid 1970’s Raymond decided to come up with a high end department store where not only woman were able to shop at but men as well. To start off, he got a loan from the bank of $40,000 and a loan from his in laws of $40,000. With a total of $80,000, Raymond and his wife leased a small shopping space in Palo Alto, CA. Raymond had a vision of a Victorian boudoir when thinking of the name for his company. He decided on the name “Victoria” to evoke the propriety and respectability associate his brand with the Victorian era; outwardly refined, Victoria’s “secrets” were hidden beneath. In the first year Victoria’s Secret earned about half a million dollars; he then moved on and opened three more stores in San Francisco and began a catalogue that soon got the attention of many. Sadly this is where the story ends. After five years, the store was earning a six million dollar profit each year. Raymond sold the company to Leslie Wexner, owner of The Limited’s. At the age of 47, Raymond committed suicide by jumping of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, CA. Roy Raymond April 15, 1947 – August 26, 1993 Ivory Dao 3
