Authorship Bible scholars attribute Genesis to Moses –Inspired by God, Moses was the human instrument through which God spoke –Also attributed to writing the first five books of the bible Date of writing –Uncertain –Probably between 1500-1400 BC –Spans more time than any other book of the Bible –Approximately 2370 years, more time than the other 65 books combined –Oldest and most detailed record of ancient history in existence

Terminology Bereshith –Hebrew name for the book meaning “in the beginning” Septuagint –Oldest Greek translation of the OT, around 270 BC Torah –Hebrew word for “the law”, refers to the first five books Pentateuch –Greek name for the first five books of the OT Dead Sea Scrolls –Ancient manuscripts found in 1947 contain parts of all books of the OT except Esther, confirming translations

Genesis 37 Summary Joseph was Jacob’s 11 th son, by Rachel We now shift our focus to Jacob’s sons In particular, we learn about Joseph’s ordeal with his brothers Learn how Joseph is Jacob’s beloved son (1-7) Joseph is hated by his brothers (8-19) Joseph is betrayed by his brothers (20-27) Joseph is sold into slavery (28-36)

Jacob’s Beloved (37:1-7) We learn that Jacob now lives in Hebron (v. 1) –Joseph, now 17, is helping his brothers tend to the livestock Joseph sees his brothers doing evil things (v. 2) –Reports this to Jacob Jacob favored Joseph over the others (v. 3) –This causes conflict between Joseph and his brothers –Coat of many colors Joseph has a dream and shares with his brothers –They would one day bow down to him (v. 7)

Joseph is Hated (37:8-19) Brothers had hated him for his first dream (v. 8) Joseph dreams another dream (v. 9) –Sun, moon, and eleven stars bowed down to him –Some day, the entire family would bow down to him –Even Jacob did not care for this dream Joseph’s brothers had taken the livestock to Shechem to graze, 60 miles north (v. 12) Jacob asks Joseph to go visit them (v. 13) –Joseph travels to Shechem and then to Dothan –He finds his brothers; however, they conspire to kill him

Joseph Betrayed (37:20-27)) His brothers execute their plan (v. 21) –Reuben hears about the plot and rescues Joseph –They decide to cast Joseph into a pit for a while and then send him back to Jacob Ishmaelite’s arrive on the scene (v. 25) –Judah begins to rethink the plan –Decide to sell Joseph to Ishmaelite and Midianite merchants (v. 27)

Joseph Sold Into Slavery (37:28-36) Ishmaelite and Midianite merchants take Joseph to Egypt (v. 28) –Reuben returns to the pit to find Joseph gone, only is clothes are left –Asks his brothers where he went Devise a story to make Jacob think Joseph is killed (v. 31) –Jacob thinks Joseph was killed by wild animals –Jacob mourns Joseph’s death Midianites sell Joseph Potiphar, an officer of an Egyptian Pharaoh, also Captain of the Guard (v. 36)

Judah Departs (38:1-6) Judah leaves his brothers and travels to a town called Adullam (v. 1) –Had sexual relations with a Canaanite woman She eventually gave birth to three sons (vs. 3-5) –Er –Onan –Shelah, while at Chezib Judah takes a wife for Er, named Tamar (v. 6) –As was the custom in the time of Judah

Wicked Er (38:7-13) Er was wicked in the sight of God (v. 7) –God slays Er Judah directs Onan to marry Tamar, Er’s wife (v. 8) –Onan knew it was wrong –Children born of this marriage would be counted towards Er –Avoid fathering children with Tamar (v. 9) –However, God slays Onan as well Judah directs Tamar to remain a widow until Shelah, the third son, was grown –Judah’s wife dies

Tamar and Judah (38:14-18) Shelah did not marry Tamar (v. 14) –She takes off her widow’s garments as was the custom and wraps herself in a veilwidow’s garments Judah sees her in the veil, but does not recognize that she is Tamar (v. 15) –Thought she was a prostitute –Talks her into laying with him –She requests his signet, bracelets, and staff in return Tamar gives birth to a son by Judah (v. 18)

Judah Discovers the Truth (38:19-26) Tamar put the garments of a widow back on (v. 19) Judah attempts to find the “prostitute” to get his jewelry back –No one knew about a prostitute in that area Three months pass, Judah finds out the truth (v. 24) –Tamar had played the part of a prostitute –She was pregnant –Judah demands that she be burned alive Judah appears to have tried to throw off the accusations, however… –Tamar brings forth the signet, bracelet and staff (v. 25)

Twins of Judah by Tamar (38:27-30) Two sons are born to Tamar (v. 27) Pharaz –Judah’s second son –Around 1730 BC –Eventually led to the formation of the Hezronites and Hamulites –Hezron’s son Aram produced the line of David Zarah, born second but had been designated as first –Judah’s first son –Eventually led to the formation of the Zarhites, Ezrahites, and Izrahites
