4 Reality Realistic fiction involves fictional stories about people, animals and events that are true to life and that could really happen.

5 Fantasy A fantasy is a story that could not happen in the real world. Often characters have special powers and the events that occur couldn’t really happen.

6 The Three Little Pigs is a… FANTASY

7 Monitor & Clarify This will help you understand the meanings of words and difficult ideas. Good readers constantly monitor themselves as they read to make sure they understand what they are reading. When you do not understand, take appropriate action: * Reread *Discuss *Ask someone *Use context clues *Stay alert for problems such as lack of concentration or unfamiliar words.

14 Discussing the Selection 1. Who are the characters in the story? 2. With what materials was the safest house built? 3.Why did Momma tell them it was time for them to go out in the world? 4. How did that make Momma feel? 5. How did that make the 3 pigs feel? 6. Would you be that brave? 7. What kind of character was the wolf?

15 Theme Connections Think about the houses in your neighborhood. What are they made of? What other stories have we read that are about homes?

16 Kinds of Homes Raise your hand and tell me one example of a home. We’ll see if we can name all of them before I show you the list. house apartment teepee igloo trailer tent camper condo town-home log cabin boathouse adobe grass hut animal homes

17 Sequence The order events take place in the story. Who can sequence the story for us?

18 Look at the pictures, choose one, tell us what is happening in the picture.

20 Fairy Tales to Folk Tales Fantasy

21 Game Time Directions: Two team captains will choose sides. Each team will take turns standing, facing the power point screen. When the picture comes up, the first person to name the story, fairy tale or folk tale scores one point. If its called out at the same time ( a tie), then each team scores the point, and it’s the next pair’s turn. At the end of the slide show, the team with the most points wins!
