1 Persuasive Techniques Exploring Persuasive Genre Workstation 5

2 Overview Instructional practices that engage learners in the consumption for genres. If we want to do anything well we need to understand what it really is and how to do it first.

3 Consume Students may read multiple types of texts from advertisements in magazines, texts, internet or whatever medium that may be applied to your grade level. Students will read and explore in peer groups of 3 or 4 in read alouds sharing. ▫ Read Alouds: A good reader reads aloud to students in his group.-(usually the teacher will model first) ▫ The Advertisement and naming the features in advertisement.

4 Critique Students learn to analyze and evaluate the specific genre based on the features.

5 Produce Students produce written examples of the specific genre orally, then in shared writing, and finally independently with gradual release of responsibility

6 Purpose: Critique Persuasion Recognize and appreciate persuasive techniques authors use to make the reader do something or change their minds about a particular point of view. Students will explore and critique persuasive techniques. ▫ Resources:  Various example of persuasive text (magazine ads or articles)  Persuasive technique Word Sorts (Terms, Definitions, Examples)  Persuasive Techniques Reflective form  Persuasive Share Out

7 Persuasive Techniques PURPOSE: CRITIQUE

8 Step 1 Review Using the Using the three sets of persuasive techniques card sorts, First, correctly group the techniques: ▫ Terms ▫ Definitions Second, correctly group the Examples to cards ▫ Examples Then, check to see if you have correctly connect the terms with its definition and example with Answer Sheet.

11 Step 2 Scavenger Hunt Teacher Model first: ▫Show advertisement Read through persuasive articles and advertisements. Look for the Author’s use of persuasive techniques. Using the Persuasive Techniques Reflection form below, identify the author’s use of these techniques and see how many different examples you can find in the advertisement. Keep track of your progress and document your findings on the Reflection Form. Make an entry for each of your advertisements. Title: Simply Irresistible Nikon How used: Author’s uses movie star to promote the camera/ Example: Ashton Kusher taking pictures having fun. Example

12 Reflection Form Read through the persuasive articles and advertisements. For each advertisement, Identify on form: 1.What is being Advertised or Title? 2.Explain how Author used this technique 3. What is the example of the technique used?

13 Step 3: Share Look over all the examples you have found. Find the most effective use of persuasive technique and be prepared to share the following: What was the topic? What was the viewpoint/Position? What technique did the author use? Why was it effective? What did you learn from the use of this technique? How can you use it in your own writing?
