1 Conversions Chapters 4-5-6

2 The Bridge Method Is the “recipe” for converting one unit of measure to another. It can be used to make conversions: Within U.S. standard weight and volume measures. Within Metric weight and volume measures. Between Metric and U.S. standard measures.

3 3 Key ingredients for the Bridge Method
Units of Measurement to be converted. Units of Measurement being converted to. Equivalencies

4 U.S. Standard Volume Equivalents
1 Tblsp. = 3 tsp. 1 cup = 16 Tblsp. 1 pint = 2 cups 1 qt. = 2 pints 1 gal. = 4 quarts U.S. Standard Weight Equivalent 1 pound = 16 ounces

5 Metric Equivalents 1 ounce = 28.35 grams 1,000 grams = 1 kilogram
1 kilogram = 2.21 pounds 1 liter = 33.8 fluid ounces 1,000 milliliters = 1 liter

6 Steps for the Bridge Method
Step 1: If the unit of measurement that you are converting is a whole number, then put it over 1. If the number is a fraction, first convert it to a decimal and then put it over 1. Step 2: Place a multiplication sign next to this. Step 3: Draw another fraction line. Step 4: Put in the units of measurement. The unit of measure to be removed is written on the bottom. The unit of measure that you are converting to is written on the top.

7 Steps for the Bridge Method
Step 5: Enter the numbers to create the equivialancy. Step 6: Multiply straight across. Step 7: Reduce the resulting fraction (if necessary) Step 8: Cancel the like units of measurement and carry over the remaining unit of measurement to the answer.
