THURSDAY 3/27/14 MOLE-PARTICLE & MOLE- VOLUME CONVERSIONS
2
MOLES AND ATOMS/MOLECULES Avogadro’s Number (6.02x10 23 particles/mol) allows us to convert between moles and atoms/molecules We use the unit “atoms” when we have individual atoms (H, He, C, N, etc.) and “molecules” when we have more than one atom (H 2, CO 2, Li 2 O, etc.)
3
EXAMPLE: MOLE-PARTICLE How many atoms are in 5.59mol calcium?
4
MOLES OF GAS AND VOLUME Avogadro said that one mole of gas at standard temperature and pressure (STP) take up 22.4L http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKs4WKv6foI&f eature=relmfu http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKs4WKv6foI&f eature=relmfu We can easily convert between moles and liters.
5
EXAMPLE: MOLE-VOLUME How many moles of CH 4 are contained in 17.2L?
6
YOUR JOB Complete the mixed stoichiometry worksheet Mini-Quiz when 10 minutes of class left! (gram-mole)
