4 Surface and Atmosphere The surface of Mars is very rocky and dusty. The atmosphere is thin with mostly carbon dioxide.

5 Miles from Earth and Length of Day Mars is 33.9 million miles from Earth. A day on Mars is 24.6 hours.

6 Temperature and Diameter The temperature is usually -81 degrees Fahrenheit The diameter is 4,222 miles.

7 Moon and Distance from Sun Mars has 2 moons named Phobos and Deimos. Mars is 141,600,000 miles from the Sun.

8 Length of Year and How Mars got its Name A year on Mars is 685 days. Mars was named after the Roman god of war for it’s blood red color.

9 Other Facts Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun. Mars is home of Olympus Mons, the largest volcano in the Solar System. Mars is 1 of 2 planets that are smaller than Earth Mars is home of Valles Marineris the largest canyon in the Solar System. A 100 pound person would weigh 38 pounds on Mars. Olympus Mons is 3 times taller than Mount Everest
