First- Take the Anticipation -Reaction Guide on page 1 Second- Share you answers with a partner in class. Did you thoughts change about these statements after you read the chapter ? Third – Discuss with your partner what you believe are the 3 most important elements teachers must manage.

TIME Will you use a timer ? Will you use time task monitors? Students What type of classroom discipline plan will you plan, design and implement? Papers How will you manage all the necessary paperwork….filing system, grading, student documents, student meeting information, collecting papers, etc.???

The First Day and the First Week are most important days to : Set the classroom tone The teacher always maintains the authority in charge of his/her students. Clearly give your expectations, rules, consequences to your students Talk about these and put them in writing for students to read and refer to frequently the first week. Model and practice routines and procedures What your students see is generally what they will do

Good managers make sure the first days of school are orderly, which calls for tight structure. An orderly classroom is established through the use of - Rules, procedures and routines Teachers explain and practice routines to make them habitual, Students eventually do them automatically with little to no direction.

Good managers introduce materials and various parts of the classroom Monitor students very closely Communicate to students directly in letting them know when they are behaving responsibly and appropriately Talk with student about how they must accept responsibility for their own conduct

Use a few appropriate class building activities to help create a caring community for the students. Day 2-3 Birthday line-up activity Bird identification activity

Attendance and Opening Procedures According to C.M Charles and Gail Senter, until students show good self-control, they should begin the day, from the second day onward , with a quiet activity either at their seats or a designated area in the room. During this time the teacher should take attendance. Calling out the roll takes up instructional time.

Older students should learn at once to go to their seats and begin work immediately. They can be given assignments such as: 5 a day math problems Journal writing Reading in a library book Using an atlas for mapping identification Using math manipulatives

11 CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT : PROBLEMS AND PROMISES
Younger students, not yet able to work on their own, are taught to go directly to the circle (KINDERS) or to their seats. What the teacher does the first day of school…should be made into a routine Routines form structure for children and they know what to expect to do everyday. Helpful for English Learners who first learn by watching others students ( parallel play)

Jones (2001)and Kagan (1994) and others encourage teachers to greet students at the door in a friendly manner: “Welcome….I am very glad that you are with me this year. I know that we will have fun and learn a lot . They will be time for you to talk and move, and also time to sit. I will use a quiet signal like this when I want you attention on me.”

I believe with others that everyday teachers should give their students structured activities that allow them to move and talk ---two basic human needs. Move around the room to find someone you do not know and share with he/she where you were born and one reason why you decided to go into the teaching profession.

Take notes for your journal assignment. Reflect on your notes later to integrate some of the main concepts, themes, strategies into your journal response.

15 Laying Out the School Year
QUOTE: “A good plan executed right now is far better than a perfect plan executed next week.” –George S. Patton Elementary teachers must have a plan in place before they begin the first day of school. Students become aware that the rules, procedures and routines are important.

16 Laying Out the School Year
Anticipating Upcoming Events Mark your yearly calendar with set events so that you can refer to “upcoming events” on an ongoing basis… Design curriculum that is aligned with seasons, national holidays, as well as non-holidays, famous American heroes, vacation times, teacher in-service days. Parent-teacher conference days, and extra duties such as bus or yard.

Organizing Thematic Units of Instruction Integrate teaching from different subject areas such as social studies, art, music, science reading, and language arts Units should be organized between times of quiet routine work and task that have higher excitement and interest value. These can be referred to as smoothers and sparklers:.
